Carmustine wafers improve the survival of patients with high-grade gliomas, but several adverse events have been reported. A 42-year-old man with left Insulo-opercular anaplastic astrocytoma developed a massive intra-cavital hematoma with subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) adjacent to the site of carmustine wafers implanted 6 month...
Forty nine gliomas were analysed for the following neuropeptides: somatostatin (SS), substance P (SP), neurotensin (NT) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and the pituitary peptide, adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH). A significant amount of authentic SS was found in a medulloblastoma, and low concentrations of SP and NT immunoreactivity in an ependymoma and cerebellar astrocytoma respectivel...
A draft genome sequence of type strain Fonsecaea multimorphosa CBS 980.96T was obtained. This species was first isolated from a cat with cerebral phaeohyphomycosis in Queensland, Australia.
Familial Incidence of Cerebral Hemorrhage • The frequency of death certified as due to cerebral hemorrhage among the brothers and sisters of 180 index patients with a proved cerebral hemorrhage has been compared with its frequency in the population of the same age and sex at the same decennium of the century as given by the Registrar General. There was no statistically significant excess of dea...
Hemorrhagic cerebral metastasis as a first manifestation of a hepatocellular carcinoma. Case report.
We report herein a rare instance in which a patient presented with a hemorrhagic cerebral metastasis as the initial manifestation of a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A few cases of cerebral metastasis from HCC have been reported in the literature, mainly from eastern countries. This is the first report from South America of a cerebral metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma.
Cerebral autoregulation refers to the mechanisms that act to keep cerebral blood flow (CBF) constant during changes in blood pressure. The mechanisms of cerebral autoregulation, especially in humans, are poorly understood but are undoubtedly multifactorial and likely reflect many redundant pathways that potentially differ between species. Whether sympathetic nervous activity influences CBF and/...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Pilocytic astrocytomas, the most common posterior fossa tumors in children, are characterized by KIAA1549-BRAF fusions and shows excellent 5-year survival rates. Pilocytic astrocytoma with gangliocytic differentiation, a recently defined pilocytic astrocytoma variant that includes glial and neuronal elements similar to a ganglioglioma, may be distinguished from a classic ...
chemokines are biologically active peptides involved in the pathogenesis of various pathologies including brain malignancies. they are amongst primitive regulators of the development of immune responses against malignant glial tumors. the present study aimed to examine the expression of cc chemokines in anaplastic astrocytoma and glioblastoma multiform patients at both mrna and protein levels. ...
BACKGROUND Astrocytoma, a common and highly malignant type of brain tumor, is associated with poor overall survival despite advances in surgical treatment, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The nuclear transcription factor Fli-1 has been shown to increase cellular proliferation and tumorigenesis in many types of cancer; however, previous reports have not described a correlation between clinical o...
A serum marker for malignant cerebral astrocytomas could improve both differential diagnosis and clinical management of brain tumour patients. To evaluate whether the serum concentration of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) may indicate glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in patients with single supratentorial space-occupying lesions, we prospectively examined 50 consecutive patients with histol...
