zinc oxide nano-particles with the average diameter of about 25 nm were modified with different mole ratios of trimetoxyvinyl silane (tmvs) and oleic acid, as coupling agents, in order to modify their surface properties and render them more hydrophobic. then, dispersibility of the surface modified nano-particles was examined in some monomers with different levels of hydrophobicity, including me...
A simple replica method is described for the rapid identification of colonies of bacteria which adhere to polystyrene. A correlation was found between the adherence of bacterial strains to polystyrene and cell surface hydrophobicity, suggesting the use of this technique in screening for cell surface mutants and in the isolation of hydrophobic bacteria from nature.

Theory suggests that variation in the attractive solvation force associated with cell-surface hydrophobicity can significantly affect contact rates among small cells in aqueous environments and consequently may influence rates and selective impacts of marine nanoflagellate grazers feeding on picoplankton assemblages. To investigate this hypothesis, we assayed the natural range in hydrophobic ch...
Objective. To determine whether several topical compounds and other chemical entities are able to diminish the surface hydrophobicity of yeast cells. Method. Hydrophobicity of yeast cells was determined by binding styrene microspheres to the surface of untreated yeast or yeast pre-incubated with various substances with potential for cell surface modification. The degree of microsphere adherence...
Protein Adsorption, Cell Adhesion and Polymer Surfaces: Molecular Processes and Experimental Methods
Adsorption of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in competition with other substances is a key to explain the relationship between substratum surface hydrophobicity and mammalian cell adhesion: when polystyrene substrata were exposed simultaneously to ECM protein and a PEO-PPO-PEO polymer surfactant (Pluronic F68), either by pre-conditioning or through protein cell secretion, a weaker substrat...
The surface hydrophobicity of nine Bacillus subtilis strains in different states (spores, vegetative cells, and dead cells) was assessed by water contact angle measurements, hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) and bacterial adhesion to hydrocarbon (BATH). Electrokinetic properties of B. subtilis strains were characterized by zeta potential measurements and found to differ appreciably a...
