Severe injuries involving the carpus are often characterized by multiple fractures of the various carpal bones with accompanying joint instability. Most such injuries can be managed successfully utilizing aggressive internal fixation techniques, with reasonably good prognosis for a pasture sound animal, satisfactory for breeding purposes. Author’s address: Elgin Veterinary Hospital, Inc., PO Bo...
DESCRIPTION A 48-year-old manual laborer presented with persistent, severe painful wrist progressively getting worse. He was actively involved in sports for more than 35 years, which often resulted in him landing on his wrists repeatedly on hard grounds. His radiographs showed arthritic changes involving the wrist joints and carpal bones. His tests were negative for any autoimmune diseases.
Rowan CH, Downing ND. BMJ Case Rep 2017. doi:10.1136/bcr-2017-221041 Description Perilunate dislocations are uncommon high-energy injuries which are missed in approximately 25% of cases on initial presentation. We present the X-rays of a 25-year-old man who fell from a height of approximately 2 metres onto an extended wrist. Plain radiographs (figure 1) show classical signs of a trans-scaphoid ...
Anatomical differences among squirrels are usually most evident in the comparison of flying squirrels and nongliding squirrels. This is true of wrist anatomy, probably reflecting the specializations of flying squirrels for the extension of the wing tip and control of it during gliding. In the proximal row of carpals of most squirrels, the pisiform articulates only with the triquetrum, but in fl...
radial polydactyly, the most common digital duplication in asian and white populations, has a wide range of manifestations. its classification is useful for planning and assessing surgical treatment. our patient had four thumbs, duplicated radial carpal bones, and a bifurcated radius. this presentation is not covered by any of the current classifications. to the best of our knowledge, this is t...
The in vivo investigation of joint kinematics in normal and injured wrist requires the segmentation of carpal bones from 3D (CT) images, and their registration over time. The non-uniformity of bone tissue, ranging from dense cortical bone to textured spongy bone, the irregular shape of closely packed carpal bones, small inter-bone spaces compared to the resolution of CT images, along with the p...
intraosseous ganglia can affect the carpal bones of the hand and must be considered in the differential diagnosis of wrist pain. a 38-year-old female presented with a 14-month history of left wrist pain and a radiolucent cystic lesion was seen computed tomography (ct) scanning. characteristic radiographic findings of a cyst in association with a fine sclerotic rim was apparent. we report an unu...
Abstract The wrist and hand have complex anatomy with small bones supporting soft tissue structures, which limits the diagnostic yield for radiologic assessment. Knowledge of different clinical entities is key to diagnosis. Some essential anatomic topics in interpretation include knowledge topographic tendon hand, intrinsic extrinsic carpal ligaments, thumb carpometacarpal triangular fibrocarti...
A 45-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with left wrist pain following a fall. Physical exam was remarkable for soft tissue swelling of the palmar and dorsal hand, point tenderness at the base of the second metacarpal, and limited active range of motion. Three-view wrist radiographs showed significant soft tissue swelling without evidence of fracture or dislocation. Computed t...
