A new cellulosomal protein from Clostridium cellulolyticum Cel9M was characterized. The protein contains a catalytic domain belonging to family 9 and a dockerin domain. Cel9M is active on carboxymethyl cellulose, and the hydrolysis of this substrate is accompanied by a decrease in viscosity. Cel9M has a slight, albeit significant, activity on both Avicel and bacterial microcrystalline cellulose...

The genome sequence of the hyperthermophilic bacterium Thermotoga maritima encodes a number of glycosyl hydrolases. Many of these enzymes have been shown in vitro to degrade specific glycosides that presumably serve as carbon and energy sources for the organism. However, because of the broad substrate specificity of many glycosyl hydrolases, it is difficult to determine the physiological substr...

Cellulose degrading bacteria in termites are important plant degraders as they play an essential role digesting cellulose for termites. This study aimed to identify (Macrotermites michaelseni) collected from Kakamega and Kapsabet region. Six were aseptically crushed Eppendorf tube containing distilled water. To distinguish non-cellulose isolates, the homogenates inoculated on nutrient agar carb...

Two adjacent, highly homologous endoglucanase genes, celD and celE from Fibrobacter succinogenes S85, which were separated by an AT-rich 223-nucleotide intergenic region were characterized. The celD gene codes for endoglucanase D (EGD), a protein of 668 residues with a molecular mass of 71.7 kDa, while the celE gene encodes endoglucanase E, a protein of 467 amino acids with a molecular mass of ...

The endoglucanase CelB isolated from culture filtrates of Streptomyces lividans IAF9 has an M(r) of 36,000. With carboxymethyl cellulose as the substrate, the Vmax and Km values are 110 IU/mg of enzyme and 1.3 mg/ml, respectively. Comparison of primary amino acid sequences classifies CelB in the H family of cellulases.

The cellulases of Streptomyces thermodiastaticus (strain 2Sts) and thermomonospora fusca (strain 190Th) were produced with carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC) serving as the carbon source during growth. Both cellulases act by random internal hydrolysis of the CMC chain, producing cellobiose, glucose, and intermediate length oligosaccharides. Cellobiase was not detected in culture filtrates produced u...

Synthetic polymer was exploited as water-superabsorbent hydrogel and helped to conserve water in the agricultural soil. The hydrogel polymers were synthesized the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and starch in addition to SiO2 nanoparticles. Superabsorbent hydrogel polymer having 35% water retention ability was analyzed with three replicates. Hydrogel increased the water restoration capability of ...
