The clinical utility of various specimens was examined for the early diagnosis of canine distemper (CD). Seven healthy dogs at 17 weeks of age were experimentally infected with a field isolate of canine distemper virus. The RT-PCR was carried out to detect CDV NP gene. Dogs showed mild fever and leukopenia, however, typical clinical signs of CD were not seen through the experimental period. CDV...
Messenger RNAs from Vero cells infected with the Onderstepoort strain of canine distemper virus (CDV) were cloned into the PstI site of plasmid pAT153. Total polyadenylated RNA was used and resulting clones were screened with 32P-labelled cDNA probes from infected and mock-infected cells. The virus specificity of the clones was proven by Northern blot hybridization and by ability to select radi...
Canine distemper virus causes global multihost infectious disease. This report details complete genome sequences of three vaccine and two new wild-type strains. The wild-type strains belong to the South African lineage, and all three vaccine strains to the America 1 lineage. This constitutes the first genomic sequences of this virus from South Africa.
Two independent cDNA clones, identified as representing the mRNA of the nucleocapsid protein gene of peste-des-petits-ruminants virus, were sequenced. The longest insert was 1662 nucleotides, not counting the poly(A) tail, and it was estimated that about 21 nucleotides were missing from the complete gene sequence. The sequence contained one long open reading frame encoding a protein of 525 amin...
The injection of suspensions of dog and ferret spleens from various generations of a particular serial passage of canine distemper was found to regularly produce a disease in rhesus monkeys which we believed to be distemper (1). Further work has shown this identification to be incorrect. The response in monkeys is not due to Carr6's virus but to lymphocytic choriomeningitis which has been simul...
Canine distemper is characterized mainly by respiratory, enteric, and nervous symptoms. Infection of the central nervous system results in demyelination, to which inflammation has been shown to contribute significantly. It has been proposed that macrophages play a major role as effector cells in this process. We report that cultured dog brain cells contain a population of macrophages capable of...
A serological survey was conducted in the Patagonia region of Argentina to estimate the prevalence of nine disease agents within the populations of free-ranging culpeo (Dusicyon culpaeus) and grey (Dusicyon griseus) foxes. The disease agents were Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV), Brucella, canine adenovirus (CAV), canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV), Encephalitozoon cuniculi, Le...
Measles is caused by a paramyxovirus (RNA family) closely related inter alia to the viruses causing canine distemper and rinderpest in cattle. The antibody response to its infection causes lifelong immunity. There are no known extra-human reservoirs of the virus, and infected fluids quickly lose their infectivity on drying outside the body. The virus was first identified by Enders and Peebles i...
