We report a case of fungemia caused by Candida magnoliae, a yeast never associated with human disease. The infection occurred in a 42-year-old Chinese patient with gastric cancer complicated by peritoneal carcinosis. Multiple blood cultures were positive for yeast; the species was well identified with biochemical and molecular methods. The phylogenetic analysis showed a close relationship of C....

Candida coagulase production was assessed by the classical tube test. All Candida krusei strains were coagulase negative, but most C. albicans and C. tropicalis strains can produce coagulase. Some strains agglutinated the Pastorex Staph-Plus reagent, probably because of antigen similarities to coagulase produced by Staphylococcus aureus that may cause mistakes in clinical laboratories.

There has been a dramatic increase in infections caused by candida worldwide. They are most commonly treated by fluconazole, which has led to emergence of fluconazole resistant candida. Also C krusei show innate resistance and C. glabrata & C. tropicalis show reduced susceptibility to fluconazole. Hence we undertook this study to speciate andto determine antifungal susceptibility pattern of

This study evaluated three differential media, CHROMagar Candida, BiGGY agar and Albicans ID2 agar, for the presumptive identification of yeast species. In total, 215 yeast isolates were included in the study. The sensitivity and specificity of CHROMagar Candida, BiGGY agar and Albicans ID2 agar for the detection of Candida albicans were 100% and 100%, 91% and 92.7%, and 99.2% and 92.7%, respec...

BACKGROUND Candidiasis is one of the most prevalent and important opportunistic fungal infections of the oral cavity caused by Candida yeast species like Candida albicans, C. glabrata, and C. krusei. In addition, several bacteria can cause oral infections. The inhibition of microbial biofilm is the best way to prevent oral infections. OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study is to evaluate the...

Mycograb (NeuTec Pharma plc) is a human genetically recombinant antibody against fungal heat shock protein 90 (HSP90). Antibody to HSP90 is closely associated with recovery in patients with invasive candidiasis who are receiving amphotericin B (AMB). Using in vitro assays developed for efficacy assessment of chemotherapeutic antifungal drugs, Mycograb showed activity against a wide range of yea...

Candida krusei colonized 12.4% of 868 patients undergoing episodes of therapy-induced granulocytopenia over a 9-year period. The gastrointestinal tract was most frequently colonized, followed by the respiratory tract and urinary tract. Ten patients developed systemic infections with C. krusei; all 10 had two or more positive blood cultures. Nine of the 10 patients were colonized with C. krusei,...

The antifungal activity of eberconazole, a new imidazole derivative, against 124 clinical isolates of Candida comprising eight different species and to 34 isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans was compared to those of clotrimazole and ketoconazole. MICs of eberconazole, determined by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards standardized microbroth method, were equal to or lower th...
