to study the effects of environmental factors on milk and fat yields (240day) traits of iranian buffaloes, 22596 and 22165 records were utilized for milk and fat yield traits, respectively. uni and bivariate analysis for estimation of (co)variation components of the traits were done in five lactations. milk yield in the 1st lactation had the highest number of records (4482), collected through c...

A prospective study of a dromedary camel herd during the 2013-14 calving season showed Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus infection of calves and adults. Virus was isolated from the nose and feces but more frequently from the nose. Preexisting neutralizing antibody did not appear to protect against infection.

6 The objective of this cohort study was to assess the relationship between perinatal calf management 7 practices relevant to the control of paratuberculosis, and passive transfer of immunoglobulin in 8 calves born in an endemically infected Irish dairy herd. Data from 176 calves were used to assess the 9 effect of time spent in the calving area, individual versus non-designated calving and col...

A 3-yr study evaluated late winter (Feb), early spring (Apr), and late spring (Jun) calving systems in conjunction with varied weaning strategies on beef cow and calf performance from Northern Great Plains rangelands. Crossbred cows were randomly assigned to one of three calving systems (on average n= 168 calving system−1 yr−1) and one of two weaning times (Wean 1, 2) within each calving system...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships between several health disorders: milk fever (MF; hypocalcaemia and parturient paresis), retained placenta (RP; retained foetal membranes), metritis (ME; endometritis and pyometra), ovarian cysts (OC; follicular and luteal cysts), clinical mastitis (CM), and lameness (LS; foot and leg problems) as affecting the reproductive performan...

Characters related to production and reproduction were observed on 744 straightbred and F2 calves and their dams produced in a five-breed diallel with Angus, Brahman, Hereford, Holstein and Jersey breeds. These data were analyzed to estimate the effects of these characters on the relationship between weaning weight and calving interval. The model used for analysis of postpartum conception and c...

BACKGROUND The aims of this study were to establish the incidence of cystic ovarian disease (COD) and its geographical and seasonal variation in Norway, investigate the effect of COD on culling rates, and describe the effects of COD on subsequent reproductive performance and its association to twins. METHODS Diagnosis of COD was made by veterinary surgeons in the field. Four statistical model...

The aim of the present study was to determine follicle development and resumption of ovarian activity in Bulgarian Murrah buffaloes by transrectal ultrasonographic monitoring of the ovaries during the first 50 days after after calving throughout the breeding season. The investigation included 18 clinically healthy Bulgarian Murrah buffaloes divided into two groups: Group I (n=8, primiparous buf...

BACKGROUND The effects of lameness on fertility have been documented frequently but few data are available from seasonally breeding, pasture-based herds (such as those used in Ireland) where cows are housed during the winter months but managed at pasture for the remainder of the year. This study determined the prevalence of lameness in a group of 786 cows in 10 pasture-based Irish dairy herds b...

Procedures for breeding value estimation for reproductive traits under pasture mating conditions were developed and tested using a computer simulation model of genetic control of bovine reproduction. The model generated annual calving rates (BCR) (0 or 1) and calving dates (CD) for each cow as a function of underlying genetic variation in two independent traits: single-service conception rate, ...
