The potential mechanisms of the extremely potent anthracycline analogue 3'-deamino-3'-(3-cyano-4-morpholinyl)doxorubicin (MRA-CN) have been compared with those of doxorubicin (DOX) by examination of drug effects on colony formation, macromolecular synthesis, DNA integrity, and ultrastructure of human leukemia cells in vitro. Following a 1-h exposure, MRA-CN was found to be 1400-fold more cytoci...

The title compounds are formed by reaction of DyI3, Dy metal and C in stoichiometric amounts in closed Ta ampoules, Dy10(C2)2I18 at 930 ◦C for 7 days, Dy4(C2)I6 at 950 ◦C for 6 days and Dy12(C2)3I17 at 900 ◦C for 11 days as pure samples according to X-ray powder diffraction. Dy10(C2)2I18 crystallizes in space group P21/c with a = 10.470(2), b = 17.152(3), c = 13.983(3) Å and β = 121.14(3)◦ , Dy...

We previously reported that ceramide, the immediate product of sphingomyelin hydrolysis, increases in response to interleukin (IL)-1 beta and plays a role in modulating IL-1 beta-mediated prostaglandin E2 production and cyclooxygenase gene expression in human fibroblasts (Ballou, L. R., C. P. Chao, M. A. Holness, S. C. Barker, and R. Raghow. 1992. J. Biol. Chem. 267:20044-20050). Here we descri...

The monokine, cachectin/tumor necrosis factor (TNF) differs from interleukin 1 (IL-1) in primary structure and in recognition by a distinct cellular receptor. It does, however, encode effector functions that are similar to those of IL-1 and characteristic of the host response to inflammation or tissue injury. Accordingly, we examined the possibility that recombinant-generated human TNF regulate...

The two isoforms of troponin C that are differentially expressed in slow and fast twitch skeletal muscle are encoded by single copy genes. We are analyzing the mechanisms that control their highly restricted pattern of differential expression. The structure of the human fast twitch troponin C isoform gene has been reported (Gahlmann, R. and Kedes, L. (1990) J. Biol. Chem. 265, 12520-12528). Her...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of complement C4 null genes (C4Q0, including C4AQ0 and C4BQ0) and C2 gene with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in southwest Han Chinese; 136 patients with SLE and 174 matched controls were genotyped. METHODS C4 null genes were determined by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure with sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP). The 2 bp insertion in ex...

A functional pyc gene was isolated from Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis C2 and was found to complement a Pyc defect in L. lactis KB4. The deduced lactococcal Pyc protein was highly homologous to Pyc sequences of other bacteria. The pyc gene was also detected in Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris and L. lactis subsp. lactis bv. diacetylactis strains.

In migraine and other primary headaches there is a strong vascular component. Besides the trigeminovascular components some of the associated symptoms point to the involvement of brain stem regions. The central limb of the trigeminal vascular pathway is its projection to the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) and to the C1-C2 levels of the spinal cord. The aim of the present study was to demonst...

Complementary DNA (cDNA) clones corresponding to the major histocompatibility (MHC) class III antigen, complement protein C2, have been isolated from human liver cDNA libraries with the use of a complex mixture of synthetic oligonucleotides (17 mer) that contains 576 different oligonucleotide sequences. The C2 cDNA were used to identify a DNA restriction enzyme fragment length polymorphism that...
