BACKGROUND Acute myringitis is an inflammation of the tympanic membrane that occurs alone or in association with external otitis or otitis media. The two clinical entities, based on physical examination, are bullous myringitis and hemorrhagic myringitis. OBJECTIVES To investigate the association of concomitant middle ear disease with acute myringitis and to analyze the bacteriologic findings ...
Coagulation activation has been demonstrated in two prototypic autoimmune skin diseases, chronic autoimmune urticaria and bullous pemphigoid, but only the latter is associated with increased thrombotic risk. Two markers of coagulation activation (prothrombin fragment F1+2 and fibrin fragment D-dimer) were measured by immunoenzymatic methods in plasma samples from 30 patients with active chronic...
BACKGROUND Autoimmune bullous dermatoses are complex diseases triggered by autoantibodies action against epidermal antigens or the dermoepidermal junction. Blisters and vesicles that evolve with erosion areas characterize them. Although rare, they present high morbidity, affecting the quality of life of patients. OBJECTIVES To assess the magnitude of autoimmune bullous dermatoses on life qual...
Bullous Keratopathy is the presence of corneal epithelial bullae, resulting from corneal endothelial disease. Bullous Keratopathy is caused by oedema of the cornea, resulting from failure of the corneal endothelium to maintain the normally dehydrated state of the cornea. Most frequently, it is due to Fuchs corneal endothelial dystrophy or corneal endothelial trauma. Fuchs dystrophy is a genetic...
Air-fluid levels within emphysematous lung bullae are a relatively uncommon occurrence in patients with preexisting bullous disease, and are not commonly reported. We report 2 cases of new onset air-fluid levels in patients with underlying bullous disease with substantially different clinical presentations but with clinical improvement after medical therapy only.
Sir, The literature reports several cases of psoriasis associated with bullous diseases, the most frequent of which is bullous pemphigoid (1 – 3). By contrast, pemphigusrelated disorders are less frequently reported in association with psoriasis. We report the case of a patient with long-standing psoriasis who developed pemphigus foliaceus and discuss the possible pathogenic relationship betwee...
Rarely, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) presents with bullous lesions due to severe edema and hydropic degeneration of the basal layer, or as a subepidermal blistering disease. Here, we describe two Mexican teenagers, one with SLE with blisters and another with bullous SLE. We also discuss the mechanisms and clinical implications of lesion formation in patients with SLE and bullae.
Linear immunoglobulin A dermatosis is a rare autoimmune bullous disease, but the most common autoimmune bullous dermatosis in children. We report a typical exuberant case of linear IgA dermatosis in a ten-month old child, who showed good response to treatment with corticosteroids and dapsone.
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) and psoriasis vulgaris represent two clinically well characterized, inflammatory, chronic skin diseases. A 62 years old female patient, from rural areas, was admitted for the presence of erythematous plaques covered by large tense blisters with clear fluid, located symmetrically on the anterior part of the upper limbs, the trunk, the neck and the lower limbs. Also the le...
