Trypanosoma brucei glycosylphosphatidylinositol phospholipase C (GPIPLC) is expressed in the bloodstream stage of the life cycle, but not in the procyclic form. It is capable of hydrolyzing GPI-anchored proteins and phosphatidylinositol (PI) in vitro. Several roles have been proposed for GPIPLC in vivo, in the release of variant surface glycoprotein during differentiation or in the regulation o...

Reports of bloodstream infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among chronic hemodialysis patients to 2 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveillance systems (National Healthcare Safety Network Dialysis Event and Emerging Infections Program) were compared to evaluate completeness of reporting. Many methicillin-resistant S. aureus bloodstream infections identif...

The morbidity and mortality associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bloodstream infections are significant. New strategies are required to treat such infections. We report here the draft genome sequences of two antibiotic-sensitive P. aeruginosa bloodstream infection isolates that were associated with rapid death in nonneutropenic patients.

Introduction / objectives The rate of bloodstream infections has been monitored monthly since 2004 at Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby. The hospital is a tertiary referral hospital with 400 beds specialising in paediatrics, gynaecology & obstetrics, urology, thoracic and vascular surgery, renal medicine, cardiology, infectious diseases and intensive care. The aim of this study was to identify...

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae has become a major contributor to nosocomial bloodstream infections. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of two MDR extended-spectrum-β-lactamase-producing strains causing bloodstream infections. These sequenced genomes display a wide-spectrum virulence arsenal and will help us understand the genomic basis of K. pneumoniae virulence.

BACKGROUND Needleless intravascular catheter connector valves have been introduced into clinical practice to minimize the risk of needlestick injury. However, infection-control risks associated with these valves may be underappreciated. In March 2005, a dramatic increase in bloodstream infections was noted in multiple patient care units of a hospital in temporal association with the introductio...

Sepsis and septic shock represent the thirteenth leading cause of death in the United States. It has been estimated that there are 500,000 new episodes each year, with an associated crude mortality of 35% [1]. Over the last 4 decades the age-adjusted mortality has climbed steadily from 0.5 to 7 per 100,000 episodes [2]. Approximately one-third to one-half of patients who are septic have culture...

The characteristics of the plasma-membrane potential of procyclic and bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei (cultured cells) were investigated using the fluorescent anionic probe bisoxonol. Observation of a stable and representative plasma-membrane potential in the resting state required careful washing, centrifugation and maintenance of the cells at room temperature before measurement...

We report the first four North American cases of Candida dubliniensis fungemia, including the first isolation of this organism from the bloodstream of an HIV-infected person. All isolates were susceptible in vitro to commonly used antifungal drugs. This report demonstrates that C. dubliniensis can cause bloodstream infection; however, the incidence of disease is not known.
