The anaesthetic requirements for microsurgery of the larynx are described and techniques in frequent use reviewed. A method involving the Coplans nasotracheal cuffed tube and using controlled ventilation is described and its advantages detailed. The illustrations and blood gas measurements support the authors' view that this technique is the most satisfactory at present available.

The field of pulmonary gas exchange is mature, with the basic principles developed more than 60 years ago. Arterial blood gas measurements (tensions and concentrations of O₂ and CO₂) constitute a mainstay of clinical care to assess the degree of pulmonary gas exchange abnormality. However, the factors that dictate arterial blood gas values are often multifactorial and complex, with six differen...

Because of limitations associated with commercial blood gas quality controls and tonometry of stored blood, fresh heparinized blood was used to compare PO2 and PCO2 performance of ten blood gas analyzers. Function of nine gas mixer/tonometer systems was evaluated. These were used to create blood samples with target values for PO2 and PCO2. All ten analyzers had high precision; this magnified sm...

Neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), who are treated according to INSURE protocol; require arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis to decide on appropriate management. We conducted this study to investigate the validity of pulse oximetry instead of frequent ABG analysis in the evaluation of these patients. From a total of 193 blood samples obtained from 30 neonates <1500 grams with RDS,...

The present study was designed to examine the anatomical parameters of the cardiopulmonary system, the function of venous blood gas parameters and the development of ascites incidence in two genetic line chickens. Three hundred forty day-old chickens from two pure broiler breeder lines, which were different in their growth rate and susceptibility to ascites syndrome were obtained. The relative ...

Blood gas analysis (BGA) is exposed to risks of errors caused by improper sampling, transport and storage conditions. The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) generated documents with recommendations for avoidance of potential errors caused by sample mishandling. Two main documents related to BGA issued by the CLSI are GP43-A4 (former H11-A4) Procedures for the collection of arter...

Ascites, also called pulmonary hypertension syndrome, is a metabolic disorder in chickens that have an insufficient pulmonary vascular capacity. The tendency of broilers to develop ascites is heritable, and successful selection against this susceptibility would benefit from good and easy-to-measure indicator traits. Blood gas parameters have been suggested as indicator traits for ascites suscep...

the objective of this study was to find a relationship between blood gas parameters and thyroid hormoneactivity with ascites syndrome in broiler chickens exposed to cold temperature and receiving a high qualitydiet. one hundred and sixty one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly divided in two equal groups. toincrease the incidence of ascites, chicks of group 1 were fed ad libitum with a higher ...
