The pathologic potential of gastric inlet patches is now being recognized. A recent adult study has shown the effectiveness of argon plasma coagulation in ablating the patch and the associated symptoms. There are no reports of ablation in children. We report a case series of successful argon plasma coagulation of gastric inlet patches and their symptoms in 5 children.

The scientific community’s quest to identify optimal targets for anticoagulant pharmacotherapy must be soundly based on fundamental constructs of vascular biology and coagulation. Although this tenet, which has served as a platform for drug development during the past 50 years, is incontrovertible, one should also ask, “What experimental model of coagulation is most applicable and directly tran...

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is nowadays used in various hematological disorders including leukemias. Hemophilia A is sex linked bleeding disorder in which there are various genetic abnormalities in factor VIII gene. Among various hematological disorders, bleeding disorders mainly hemophilia in now widely treated using plasma derived and recombinant factor VIII concentrates. Day to day tra...

INTRODUCTION This section covers the means, as far as we now know them, by which components of the blood plasma produce an insoluble protein meshwork, or gel, at a site of blood-vessel damage. The plasma is normally completely fluid, containing all its proteins in soluble form. When the clotting system is activated at a site of blood-vessel damage, a series of proteolytic reactions is set going...

OBJECTIVES Recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) is increasingly being given to treat massive bleeding. However, there is no clear guidance on which patients are suitable for treatment and how the effects of treatment should be monitored. The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the coagulation status of severely hemodiluted blood samples before and after treatment with therapeutic dose...

Deficiencies of coagulation factors other than factor VIII and factor IX that cause bleeding disorders are inherited as autosomal recessive traits and are rare, with prevalences in the general population varying between 1 in 500 000 and 1 in 2 million for the homozygous forms. As a consequence of the rarity of these deficiencies, the type and severity of bleeding symptoms, the underlying molecu...

The neurovascular unit is a key player in brain development, homeostasis, and pathology. Mental stress affects coagulation, while severe mental illnesses, such as recurrent depression and schizophrenia, are associated with an increased thrombotic risk and cardiovascular morbidity. Evidence indicates that the hemostatic system is involved to some extent in the pathogenesis, morbidity, and progno...

Background: Bleeding assessment tools are key components in the evaluation of patients suspicious for bleeding disorders. The exact determination of the normal ranges of ISTH-BAT (International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis –Bleeding Assessment Tool) in the healthy population is a crucial step for determining who needs to be referred for further coagulation laboratory examinations. We ai...
