The following conclusions may be drawn from the results obtained in this study. 1. In the minor surgical cases (considered normal) the chemical composition of the blood serum agrees, as far as its proteins are concerned, with the usual standard values. When examined at different times, the serum of such cases shows no variation in the total protein content or in its individual fractions. The in...

BACKGROUND Controversy exists in predicting costly hospitalization in patients with chronic kidney disease and co-morbid conditions. We therefore tested associations between serum chemistry values and the occurrence of in-patient hospital costs over a thirteen month study period. Secondarily, we derived a linear combination of variables to estimate probability of such occurrences in any patient...

The reported correlation between plasma calcium and blood pressure has been investigated in 412 young men and women. In this sample, it seemed to be due to a stronger correlation between blood pressure and plasma albumin. Blood pressures were also significantly correlated with plasma high-density lipoprotein in men and with plasma uric acid in women.

Compact analyzers suited to near-patient testing estimate hematocrit by measuring the conductivity of undiluted blood. We evaluated the accuracy of hematocrit determination of one such analyzer (Instrumentation Laboratory BGE analyzer) against an automated cell counter (EPC) and packed cell volume (PCV) microhematocrit. When specimens (n = 34) from outpatient and ward patients were analyzed wit...

Blood collection devices interact with blood to alter blood composition, serum, or plasma fractions and in some cases adversely affect laboratory tests. Vascular access devices may release coating substances and exert shear forces that lyse cells. Blood-dissolving tube additives can affect blood constituent stability and analytical systems. Blood tube stoppers, stopper lubricants, tube walls, s...

The Coscoroba Swan (Coscoroba coscoroba) is an unusual member of the Anatidae found in South America, from the Falkland Islands and Tierra del Fuego through Chile and Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay as far north as Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil. The species is not threatened globally, but some local populations have declined and the status of others is unknown. The objective of this study was t...

We studied the hematology and blood chemistry of wintering Common Cranes (Grus grus). Red cell numbers (2.460 x lo6 mm-3), hemoglobin content (14.8 g/100 ml), and hematocrit (42.9%) were similar in adult and young birds. Young birds have significantly higher leukocyte numbers (28 x 10” mm-3) than adults (22 x 10’ mm-‘). Heterophils are the most abundant white blood cells in adults (55%) whereas...

Improper design or use of blood collection devices can adversely affect the accuracy of laboratory test results. Vascular access devices, such as catheters and needles, exert shear forces during blood flow, which creates a predisposition to cell lysis. Components from blood collection tubes, such as stoppers, lubricants, surfactants, and separator gels, can leach into specimens and/or adsorb an...

Clinical pathological studies were undertaken in 5 calves with experimentally-induced heartwater. The most important findings include a progressive anaemia which may be associated with bone marrow depression and fluctuations in the total and differential white cell count, of which an eosinopenia and a lymphocytosis were the most marked. A severe drop in serum protein, especially in the albumin ...
