We report high-yield room-temperature growth of vertical single-crystalline bismuth nanowire array by vacuum thermal evaporation of bismuth over a choice of arbitrary substrate coated with a thin interlayer of nanoporous vanadium. The nanowire growth is the result of spontaneous and continuous expulsion of nanometer-sized bismuth domains from the vanadium pores, driven by their excessive surfac...

The in vitro interactions between bismuth subcitrate and a variety of antimicrobial agents against 12 Campylobacter pyloridis (C. pylori) isolates were studied by the agar dilution checkerboard technique. The combination of bismuth subcitrate with the older quinolone, oxolinic acid, produced synergistic activity against all strains. This observation, however, could not be extended to the (aryl)...

Multiresistance among microorganisms to common antimicrobials has become one of the most significant concerns in modern medicine. Nanomaterials are a new alternative to successfully treat the multiresistant microorganisms. Nanostructured materials are used in many fields, including biological sciences and medicine. Recently, it was demonstrated that the bactericidal activity of zero-valent bism...

The registry of bismuth dimers, integral components of the bismuth nanoline on Si(001), is examined. In contrast to the currently accepted view, the bismuth dimers are found to be in registry with the two-dimensional lattice created by the silicon dimers. The consequences of this finding are briefly explored.

A chelating resin, cross-linked chitosan modified with the glycine moiety (glycine-type chitosan resin), was developed for the collection and concentration of bismuth in aquatic samples for ICP-MS measurements. The adsorption behavior of bismuth and 55 elements on glycine-type chitosan resin was systematically examined by passing a sample solution containing 56 elements through a mini-column pa...

A new method is presented for interpreting the Raman spectra of bismuth oxides. The method relies on empirical relations between bismuth-oxygen (Bi-0) bond lengths, bond strengths, and Raman stretching frequencies. A least-squares exponential fit of crystallographically determined Bi-0 bond lengths and Raman stretching frequencies is presented along with a relation between Bi-0 bond strengths, ...

Complex of bismuth, an anti-inflammatory drug, was studied by EPR spectroscopy. The aim of this study was to determine concentrations and properties of free radicals formed during thermal sterilization of bismuth subgallate according to pharmacopoeia norms to optimize its sterilization process. Different temperatures (160°C, 170°C, and 180°C) and times (120 minutes, 60 minutes, and 30 minutes) ...

: Bismuth compounds have been used extensively as medicines and in particular for the treatment of gastrointestinal ailments. In addition to bismuth's well known gastroprotective effects and efficacy in treating H. pylori infection it also has broad anti-microbial, anti-leishmanial and anti-cancer properties. Aspects of the biological chemistry of bismuth are discussed and biomolecular targets ...

Evidence is presented to show that bismuth combines in vitro with the phosphate of nucleic acids in a manner similar to its reaction with inorganic phosphate. When tested under similar conditions, protein exhibited no attraction for bismuth. The results of the in vitro experiments, which are of interest within themselves, may be indirectly applicable to in vivo staining. Dividing cells of onion...
