BACKGROUND Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is often associated with neck lymph node (LN) metastases, which in many cases is the only manifestation of this disease. The submucosal and infiltrative characteristics of nasopharyngeal carcinoma make this type of cancer difficult to diagnose. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma has also been reported to be strongly associated with the Epstein-Barr virus. METHODS We ...

UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION Epstein-Barr virus-positive mucocutaneous ulcer is a newly recognized clinicopathologic entity in the spectrum of Epstein-Barr virus-positive lymphoproliferative disorders. This entity is characterized by a self-limited, indolent course. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 74-year-old, type 2 diabetic man who presented with an ulceroinfiltrative skin lesion on...

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by a constellation of varied clinical presentations, although the nearly universal presence of autoantibodies is a salient unifying feature. Ongoing research efforts focus on understanding the complex combination of genetic and environmental factors that lead to SLE in select individuals. Our previous wor...

A monoclonal antibody, referred to as 38.13, was obtained by fusing murine myeloma cells with Lewis rat splenocytes sensitized with Daudi cells (human Burkitt lymphoma containing Epstein--Barr virus genome but lacking HLA-A, -B, and -C and beta 2-microglobulin molecules at the cell surface). 38.13 antibody was demonstrated to be a rat IgM. By complement-dependent microcytotoxicity and indirect ...

INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are herpesviruses, which account for the majority of oral viral infections. Herpes simplex virus, varicellazoster virus, and Epstein-Barr virus infections nearly always result from reactivation of latent virus, while cytomegalovirus infections, besides presenting as reactivated disease, are almost as likely to present as a primary...

Pure human gamma-interferon as well as alpha-interferon inhibited induction of immunoglobulin synthesis by Epstein-Barr virus but not by pokeweed mitogen in B lymphocytes from adult but not from newborn humans. The interferons inhibited the infected B lymphocytes directly, irrespective of the Epstein-Barr virus immune status of the donor, and their inhibitory effect was synergistic.

In southern Tasmania, Australia, primary Epstein-Barr virus infection occurs in adults greater than 30 years of age at a higher frequency (approximately 13% of all cases) than is generally reported for other parts of the world, and approximately 7% of the general population of the region have no antibodies to the virus. Epstein-Barr virus should not be overlooked as a possible cause of disease ...

Purified recombinant protein encoded by the BXLF-I open reading frame of the Epstein-Barr virus genome has thymidine kinase activity. The substrate behaviors of various nucleosides toward this enzyme were tested. Halogenated deoxyuridines, zidovudine, and bromovinyldeoxyuridine are efficient substrates, while acyclovir and dihydroxypropylmethylguanine are relatively poor substrates for the Epst...

Epstein-Barr virus-associated early antigen and viral capsid antigen were efficiently induced in human lymphoblastoid P3HR-1 cells with culture fluid of Fusobacterium nucleatum, a member of the indigenous microbial flora of the human host. This finding may suggest a new approach to assess the possible role of the "cofactor(s)" in the etiology of Epstein-Barr virus-related diseases.

Elevated liver enzymes accompanied by Infectious Mononucleosis syndrome are widely seen in primary Epstein-Barr virus infection while acute symptomatic hepatitis without typical presentations of EBV is extremely rare. In the following report, we present a patient with acute isolated hepatitis due to laboratory confirmed Epstein-Barr virus.
