Precise radial velocity observations of the nearby M4 dwarf Gl 876 with the Observatoire de Haute Provence 1.93 m telescope and the new 1.20 m swiss telescope at la Silla indicate the presence of a jovian mass companion to this star. The orbital fit to the data gives a period of 60.8 days, a velocity amplitude of 246m.s−1 and an eccentricity of 0.34. Assuming that Gl 876 has a mass of 0.3 M , t...

Context. For the past 3 years we have been monitoring a sample of 62 K giant stars using precise stellar radial velocity measurements with high accuracy taken at the Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg. Aims. To search for sub-stellar companions to giant stars and to understand the nature of the diverse radial velocity variations exhibited by K giant stars. Methods. We present precise stellar...

Recently, a number of coding techniques have been reported to achieve near toll quality synthesized speech at bit-rates around 4 kb/s. These include variants of Code Excited Linear Prediction (CELP), Sinusoidal Transform Coding (STC) and Multi-Band Excitation (MBE). While CELP has been an effective technique for bit-rates above 6 kb/s, STC, MBE, Waveform Interpolation (WI) and Mixed Excitation ...

We have obtained 11.7 µm and 17.9 µm images at the Keck I telescope of the circumstellar dust emission from OH 231.8+4.2, an evolved mass-losing red giant with a well studied bipolar outflow. We detect both a central unresolved point source with a diameter less than 0. ′′ 5 producing F ν (17.9 µm) = 60 Jy, and emission extended more than 1 ′′ away from the star which is aligned with the bipolar...

Small planets, 1-4× the size of Earth, are extremely common around Sun-like stars, and surprisingly so, as they are missing in our solar system. Recent detections have yielded enough information about this class of exoplanets to begin characterizing their occurrence rates, orbits, masses, densities, and internal structures. The Kepler mission finds the smallest planets to be most common, as 26%...

We present K-band integral field observations of the circumstellar envelope of the evolved star OH 231.8+4.2. Spatial and spectral information were simultaneously acquired using the sinfoni integral field unit, with adaptive optics, on the Very Large Telescope. The observations reveal the discovery of H2 emission (1) around the centre of the nebula and (2) located in clumps along the Western si...

We present broad-band imaging with the Subaru Telescope of a 25 ′ ×25 ′ field surrounding the radio galaxy TN J1338– 1942 at redshift z = 4.1. The field contains excesses of Lyman-α emitters (LAEs) and Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) identified with a protocluster surrounding the radio galaxy. Our new wide-field images provide information about the boundary of the protocluster and its surroundings....

Submillimetre HCO+(J = 4− 3) mapping observations of the immediate environs of the infrared source IRS 7 in Corona Australis have provided corroborative evidence for the existence of the rotating molecular disk detailed in our earlier paper. An improved estimate of 0.8M for the mass of the central protostar is obtained.

We report the discovery of a transiting hot Jupiter around OGLE-TR-111, from our radial velocity follow-up of OGLE transiting candidates in Carina. The planet has a mass of 0.53 ± 0.11 M J and a radius of 1.0 +0.13 −0.06 R J. Three transiting exoplanets have already been found among OGLE candidates, all with periods near 1.5 days. The planet presented here, with P = 4.0 days, is the first exopl...
