The role of nitric oxide in group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection was evaluated by inhibiting its production with aminoguanidine (AG). AG-treated mice displayed higher mortality rates and more frequent and severe arthritis than controls. Worsening of arthritis correlated with a higher number of GBS cells in the joints and local interleukin-1 beta production.

Pancreatic islets from DBA/2 mice infected with the D variant of encephalomyocarditis (EMC-D) virus revealed lymphocytic infiltration with moderate to severe destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Our previous studies showed that the major population of infiltrating cells at the early stages of infection is macrophages. The inactivation of macrophages prior to viral infection resulted in the pre...

Previous reports from our laboratory have shown that ethanol elicits hypotension in female but not in male rats and that this effect of ethanol is estrogen dependent (El-Mass MM and Abdel-Rahman AA. Alcohol Clin Exp Res 23: 624-632, 1999; El-Mass MM and Abdel-Rahman AA. Clin Exp Hypertens 21: 1429-1445, 1999). In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that ethanol lowers blood pressure in ...

Nitric oxide (NO) produced by constitutively expressed NO synthase (cNOS) plays an important role in maintaining the mucosal integrity of the small intestine, in collaboration with prostaglandins produced by cyclooxygenase (COX)-1. We examined whether intestinal damage is provoked in rats under inhibition of both cNOS and COX-2. The animals were given L-NAME (N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester)...

Nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandins are inflammatory mediators produced during meningitis. The purpose of the present study was to pharmacologically inhibit cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) to 1) explore the prostaglandin contribution to blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier permeability alterations and 2) elucidate the in vivo concentration relationship between prostaglan...
