Screening for carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is fundamental to modern-day nosocomial infection control, both for epidemiologic investigation and day-to-day decisions on barrier isolation. Numerous microbiologic techniques have been advocated for screening for nasal carriage of MRSA, including the use of charcoal rather than rayon swabs, preincubation of swabs in ...

The investigation of wildlife gastrointestinal microbiomes by next-generation sequencing approaches is a growing field in microbial ecology and conservation. Such studies often face difficulties in sample preservation if neither freezing facilities nor liquid nitrogen (LQN) are readily available. Thus, in order to prevent microbial community changes because of bacterial growth after sampling, p...

Over the last 40 years, evidence has accumulated to suggest the ubiquitous presence of infections with intracellular bacteria of the genus Chlamydia in different livestock species. Different methods to clinical specimens substantiated such widespread, but mostly clinically unapparent, presumably low-level infections. In this initial epidemiological study, we addressed the question of chlamydial...

Background and Aim: Fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) sets in following interactivity of fungi with Sino nasal tract when immune system is subdued. Due to varied clinical presentation of FRS with inconclusive evidence of imaging, mycological evaluation helps to identify and speciate the fungi .FRS can be diagnosed with biopsy tissue and/or deep nasal swabs. This study was undertaken to know risk fact...

Maternal vaginal colonization with group B streptococcus (GBS) is a major risk factor for invasive GBS infection in newborns. The CDC-recommended method for detecting GBS colonization is to culture vaginal and rectal swabs in a selective broth followed by subculture on blood agar or a selective medium. A high incidence of antimicrobial resistance in the fecal microflora can compromise the recov...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of major pathogens in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). In addition to intrinsic MRSA infection of the mastoid air cell system, nasal colonization of MRSA, a known predictor of postoperative surgical site infection, may pose increased risk of postoperative complications. The purpose of this ...

Flocked swabs (Copan) were compared to rayon swabs (Copan) for the nasal detection of Staphylococcus aureus in 90 healthy volunteers sampled sequentially during a 5-week period. The use of flocked swabs improved the number of nasal carriers (P = 0.026), the number of positive specimens (P = 0.01), and the quantity of bacteria in positive samples (P = 0.004).

conclusions nucleic acid amplification tests (naats) are very appropriate in detection of infected individuals. detection techniques such as naats are independent of bacterial viability, and have a potential to limit false negative samples, therefore, in our country, the application of different laboratory diagnosis methods including naats with culture as gold standard for determination antimic...

INTRODUCTION Nosocomial infections are one of the greatest problems in public health. Several studies have highlighted the role played by the hospital environment as a possible source of transmission of nosocomial pathogens. METHODS A five-year monitoring of bacterial contamination on healthcare workers hands, surfaces most closely in contact with inpatient wards, operating theatres and "at r...

Chytridiomycosis, caused by the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is an emerging infectious disease responsible for amphibian declines on several continents. In laboratory conditions, optimal temperatures for Bd growth and survivorship are between 17 and 25 degrees C. We investigated the effect of different storage temperatures, both in field and laboratory condition...
