In order to select an optimal set of pivots for dimension reduction, such as Simple-Map and sketches based on ball partitioning, we propose a method named Annealing by Increasing Resampling (AIR, for short). AIR assumes that every state is evaluated by using a sample set. Starting from an arbitrary initial state, AIR repeats to transit states by hill climbing, with evaluating the resampled sets...

A fast HPLC method for the analysis of DNPH derivatized carbonyls found in air samples is demonstrated. A 1.8-μm StableBond C18 separated a standard of the major 13 DNPH derivatized carbonyls. An air sample was analyzed in under 10 minutes and found to contain several carbonyls.

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between, transport, land-use and air quality and mapping of air pollutants by means of spatial information sciences, which would provide useful information for decision-makers. Integrated transport, land-use and air quality monitoring are prioritized especially in metropolitan areas. The complexity is straight forward, since data, indicators,...

We present the fabrication and evaluation of microdebubblers that are able to remove large bubbles while keeping a very low dead volume. The devices use a polytetrafluoroethylene membrane that is permeable to air in order to filter air bubbles out of an aqueous sample. The dead volume of the devices is less than one microliter, but bubbles as large as 60 microliters can be removed. This simple ...

Tetrahydrothiophene (THT) is an odor additive used widely in the world. This paper introduced a new pre-concentration techniques coupled with a PFPD detector to analyze THT in ambient air samples. The positive results have been obtained in both standard and actual sample analysis. The results indicate that using Summa canisters or Tedlar bags to take the samples and followed by pre concentratio...

Bacteria are known to be present in the air at beef processing plants, but published data regarding the prevalences of airborne Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica are very limited. To determine if airborne pathogens were present in beef processing facilities, we placed sedimentation sponges at various locations in three commercial beef plants that processed cattle from slaughter ...

This paper presents preliminary experimental results on the measurement of the air permeability coefficient in a concrete sample that has been subjected to constant pressure differences of 5 and 10 Pa (3.45 x 1 0 ' ~ 6.90 x 1u2 psi). This experimental model simulates indoor radon gas entry by advection. A reliable air permeability system was designed to perform laboratory measurements on concre...

Drying of green peas in a Fluidized Bed Dryer (FBD) with inert particle, heated by combined sources of hot air and InfraRed (IR) radiation, has been experimentally and theoretically studied. For this purpose, an experimental set up was constructed. This setup was composed of a cylindrical bed dryer containing some inert particles which are fluidized by hot air. Some infrared lamps were also pla...

In this paper we present a first order study of liquid water detachment and entrainment into air flows in hydrophobic microchannels. A silicon based microfabricated test structure was used for this purpose. It consists of a 500 μm wide by 45 μm deep U-shaped channel 23 mm in length through which air is flown. The structures are treated with a Molecular Vapor Deposition (MVD) process that render...

We describe a continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (CF-IRMS) technique for high-precision δD and δ13C measurements of atmospheric methane on 40 mL air samples. CH4 is separated from other air components by utilizing purely physical processes based on temperature, time and mechanical valve switching. Chemical agents are avoided. Trace amounts of interfering compounds can be separated ...
