We investigate theoretically the collective dynamics of soft active particles living in a viscous fluid. We focus on a minimal model for active but nonmotile particles consisting of N>1 elastic dimers deformed by active stresses and interacting hydrodynamically. We first derive a set of effective equations of motion for the positions of the particles. We then exploit these equations in two expe...

Serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) has been implicated as a novel component of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. Recently we have demonstrated that mTOR regulates cell motility in part through p70 S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) pathways. Little is known about the role of PP2A in the mTOR-m...

Abstract Run-and-tumble (RnT) motion is an example of active motility where particles move at constant speed and change direction random times. In this work we study RnT with diffusion in a harmonic potential one dimension via path integral approach. We derive Doi-Peliti field theory use it to calculate the entropy production other observables closed form. All our results are exact.

In response to a sound stimulus, the inner ear emits sounds called otoacoustic emissions. While the exact mechanism for the production of otoacoustic emissions is not known, active motion of individual hair cells is thought to play a role. Two possible sources for otoacoustic emissions, both localized within individual hair cells, include somatic motility and hair bundle motility. Because physi...

herpetosiphon giganteus is a filamentous gliding bacterium. gliding motility is the movement of the cells over surfaces without the aid of flagella. the mechanism responsible for bacterial gliding motility has not been known and there are only a few data on herpetosiphon giganteus. the aim of this study was to observe the ultrastructure and negative staining of isolated strains of herpetosiphon...

background: pentoxifylline (px) is a methyxanthin derivative that influences the sperm motion characteristics. in general, px has been reportedly effective in preserving sperm motility in vitro, also when administered orally to the asthenozoospermic patients. objective: the main objective of this prospective clinical trial study was to rule out the effect of oral administration of px on sperm p...

Long-distance intracellular transport of organelles, mRNA, and proteins ("cargo") occurs along the microtubule cytoskeleton by the action of kinesin and dynein motor proteins, but the vast network of factors involved in regulating intracellular cargo transport are still unknown. We capitalize on the Drosophila melanogaster S2 model cell system to monitor lysosome transport along microtubule bun...

opium is one of the oldest herbal medicines currently used as an analgesic, sedative and antidiarrheal treatment. the effects of opium are principally mediated by the μ -,κ- and δ-opioid receptors. opioid substances consist of all natural and synthetic alkaloids that are derived from opium. most of their effects on gastrointestinal motility and secretion result from suppression of neural activi...

background: about 90% of the worlds contraceptive users are women. this gender-based usage has occurred due to the emphasis of family planning programs and contraception research. condom, vasectomy and withdrawal are the only male contraception devices available with less assurance for men. for new male contraceptive to have an impact, they must be acceptable to both men and women, as well as ...
