On the odd day, a mathematician might wonder what constructive mathematics is all about. They may have heard arguments in favor of constructivism but are not at all convinced by them, and in any case they may care little about philosophy. A typical introductory text about constructivism spends a great deal of time explaining the principles and contains only trivial mathematics, while advanced c...
We investigate several kinds of regulated rewriting (matrix, ordered, programmed, and variants thereof) and of parallel rewriting mechanisms (Lindenmayer systems, uniformly limited Lindenmayer systems, limited Lindenmayer systems and scattered context grammars) as accepting devices, in contrast with the usual generating mode. In a lot of cases, accepting mode turns out to be exactly as powerful...
Finding an infinite sequence of transitions (a run) going through some special states (called accepting) is of importance for fields like formal verification. Whereas finding such a sequence as been extensively studied, the problem of maintaining this sequence upon changes in the model or the specification has received less attention. In this work, we propose a solution to the maintenance of an...
We show how to adapt an existing non-DFS-based accepting cycle detection algorithm OWCTY [10, 15, 29] to the I/O efficient setting and compare its I/O efficiency and practical performance to the existing I/O efficient LTL model checking approach of Edelkamp and Jabbar [14]. The new algorithm exhibits similar I/O complexity with respect to the size of the graph while it avoids quadratic increase...
We treat the problem of selecting the next degree of freedom for update in an extremal optimization algorithm designed to find the ground state of a system with a complex energy landscape. We show that there exists a best distribution for selecting the next degree of freedom in order to optimize any linear function of the state probabilities, e.g., the expected number of visits to the ground st...
The methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs) are concentrated at the cell poles in an evolutionarily diverse panel of bacteria and an archeon. In elongated cells, the MCPs are located both at the poles and at regions along the length of the cells. Together, these results suggest that MCP location is evolutionarily conserved.
