Swiss 3T3 cells exhibit contact-regulated cell growth and have a lower ability to transport 2-deoxyglucose than polyoma (Py)-transformed 3T3 cells. Py3T3 cells treated with dibutyryl cyclic adenosine 3'5' monophosphate (dBcAMP) and theophylline have reduced cell growth and transport 2-deoxyglucose at the same rate as normal 3T3 cells. Evidence that the cessation of cell growth and reduced trans...

Resting 3T3 cells have relatively more sulphated glycosaminoglycans and Ca2+ in their cell coat than do growing or SV40-virus-transformed cells. It is suggested that the different Ca2+-binding capacity controls cellular activities by affecting the distribution of Ca2+ between the intra- and ecto-cellular compartments.

The ether lipid analogue l-octadecyl-2-methyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (ET-18-OCH.,) has been shown to be a direct inhibitor of Swiss 3T3 fibroblast and BG1 ovarian adenocarcinoma cell cytosolic phosphoinositide selective phospholipase C (PIPLC) using |3H|-phosphatidylinositol-(4, 5)-bisphosphate (|'II|I"II'<) as the substrate. The inhibition occurred when ET-18-OCH., was incorporated into ...

BACKGROUND Centipede grass (CG) originates from China and South America and is reported to contain several C-glycosyl flavones and phenolic constituents, including maysin and luteolin derivatives. This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the antiobesity activity of CG and its potential molecular mechanism in 3T3-L1 cells. METHODS To study the effect of CG on adipogenesis, differen...

The human multidrug resistance gene 1 (MDR1) encodes a plasma membrane P-glycoprotein (P-gp) that functions as an efflux pump for various structurally unrelated anticancer agents. We have identified two nonsynonymous germ-line mutations of the MDR1 gene, C3583T MDR1 and T3587G MDR1, in peripheral blood cell samples from Japanese cancer patients. Two patients carried the C3583T MDR1 allele that ...

BACKGROUND Erythropoietin (EPO) has potent neuroprotective effects. The short-term delivery of high-dose EPO seemed to improve patients' neuromuscular functions; however, excessive EPO resulted in systematically high hematocrit and thrombotic risk. In our study, we established a cellular material for future in vivo studies of neurodegenerative diseases based on EPO provided regionally at a nont...

KB cells express a folate-binding protein that is anchored to the plasma membrane by a glycosylated phosphatidylinositol (GPI) tail and these cells can grow in medium containing a very low folate concentration (1 nM). In contrast, mouse 3T3 cells do not express a membrane-associated folate-binding protein and cannot grow under similar low folate conditions. In these studies, 3T3 cells were tran...

Background: Adipocyte and osteoblast derive from the same mesenchimal progenitor. Agerelated decrease in bone mass is accompanied by an increase in marrow adipose tissue. Vitamin D3 (VD3) inhibits adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Recently it has been demonstrated that alendronate (ALN) inhibits adipogenesis while promoting osteoblast differentiation of mesenchimal stem cells. Aim of the St...

Subversion or appropriation of cellular signal transduction pathways is a common strategy employed by viruses to promote an environment within infected cells that supports the viral replicative cycle. Using subsets of 3T3 murine fibroblasts previously shown to differ in their ability to support myxoma virus (MV) replication, we investigated the role of host serine-threonine kinases (STKs) as po...
