The transformation of phenylethyl chloride to 3,4-dihydroisoquinolines is shown to proceed via phenonium ion. The evidence comes from a study of dideuterated analogue 4, and the monomethylated and dimethylated compounds 2 and 3.

1. Organophosphorus compounds that produce a delayed neurotoxic effect in hens phosphorylate a specific site in the brain soon after administration. 2. Phosphorylation of the specific site by di-isopropyl [(32)P]phosphorofluoridate in vitro is blocked by the prior addition of phenyl phenylacetate. 3. A small proportion of the total activity of hen brain hydrolysing phenyl phenylacetate in vitro...

Production of CH(4) in anoxic rice field soil is stimulated by the addition of rice straw. Previous experiments showed that acetate and propionate are the most important intermediates of the carbon flow to CH(4), and accumulate if CH(4) production is inhibited by 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES). However, some unidentified compounds were found to accumulate in addition. We now identified them as be...

Natural toxins, such as isothiocyanate (ITC), are harmful secondary metabolites produced by plants. Many natural toxins occur in commercial crops, yet their possible negative repercussions on especially non-target soil organisms are largely unknown. This study examined life-history and gene transcriptional responses to 2-phenylethyl ITC on two soil arthropod species: Folsomia candida and Protap...

Herein, nuruks derived from non-glutinous and glutinous rice inoculated with Aspergillus oryzae N159-1 (having high alpha-amylase and beta-glucosidase activities) were used to produce Korean alcoholic beverages. The resultant beverages had enhanced fruity (ethyl caproate and isoamyl alcohol) and rose (2-phenethyl acetate and phenethyl alcohol) flavors and high taste scores.
