The model of the lung as an elastic continuum undergoing small distortions from a uniformly inflated state has been used to describe many lung deformation problems. Lung stress-strain material properties needed for this model are described by two elastic moduli: the bulk modulus, which describes a uniform inflation, and the shear modulus, which describes an isovolume deformation. In this study ...

In this work, we explored the potential of measuring shear wave propagation using optical coherence elastography (OCE) based on a swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. Shear waves were generated using a 20 MHz piezoelectric transducer (circular element 8.5 mm diameter) transmitting sine-wave bursts of 400 μs, synchronized with the OCT swept source wavelength sweep. The acousti...

called maximum shear modulus, Gmax. It can be determined by in-situ methods from the measurements of the shear wave velocity, Vs, by means of crosshole, down-hole, up-hole, or surface wave testing. The relationship between maximum shear modulus and shear wave velocity is rigorous: 2 max s G V    where ρ is soil density. This parameter can be also obtained in laboratory by resonant column or ...

In the electronics industry epoxy molding compounds, underfills and adhesives are used for the packaging of electronic components. These materials are applied in liquid form, cured at elevated temperatures and then cooled down to room temperature. During these processing steps residual stresses are built up resulting from both cure and thermal shrinkage. These residual stresses add up to the st...

This paper derives conditions for localized deformation for a transversely isotropic constitutive relation intended to model the response of geological materials in the axisymmetric compression test. The analysis considers the possibility of shear bands, with dilation or compaction, and pure compaction bands. The latter are planar zones of localized pure compressive deformation (without shear) ...

the present research was conducted to explore the effect of employing two language teaching approaches, i.e. schema-based instruction (sbi) and translation-based instruction (tbi), on vocabulary knowledge, structure and reading comprehension ability of forty one female students learning english in grade one senior high school in rivash, kuhsorkh, iran. while sbi focuses on schemata, i.e. words ...

We have measured the shear modulus and viscosity of two supercooled liquids: tricresyl phosphate and squalane. In both cases we find that the width of the peak in the imaginary part of the shear modulus narrows as the temperature is lowered toward the glass transition temperature. For tricresyl phosphate, we find no evidence for a decoupling of the viscosity and shear modulus relaxation times f...

We use the Surface Evolver to determine the shear modulus G of a dry 2D foam of 2500 bubbles, using both extensional and simple shear. We examine G for a range of monodisperse, bidisperse and polydisperse foams, and relate it to various measures of the structural disorder of each foam. In all cases, the shear modulus of a foam decreases with increasing disorder.
