Diabetes mellitus (DM) involves metabolic changes that can impair bone repair, including a prolonged inflammatory response. A salicylic acid-based poly(anhydride-ester) (SA-PAE) provides controlled and sustained release of salicylic acid (SA) that locally resolves inflammation. This study investigates the effect of polymer-controlled SA release on bone regeneration in diabetic rats where enhanc...

Polymeric hollow nanospheres with stabilized structure have been realized by self-assembly of crosslinkable rigid poly(amic acid) ester (PAE) oligomer and coil-like poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVPy) via hydrogen bonding in their common solvent and subsequent photo-crosslinking of the PAE.

We recently described a total-cell-counting method for postantibiotic effect (PAE) assessments that performs well with weakly bactericidal antibiotics. This note presents a modified method for the study of PAE with extended capability to cover a broad range of bactericidal activities.

We show several concrete attacks on an authenticated encryption scheme PAE which appeared in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, Vol. 56, no. 8, pp. 4025–4037. Additionally we show some flaws and oversights in the analysis (presented in the same paper) used to prove PAE to be a secure authenticated encryption scheme.

Background Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent disease associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The standard of care for moderate-to-severe LUTS unresponsive to pharmacological treatment is the transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). However, this intervention is not exempt from complications. Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) has been described as a new, eff...

The clinical entry characteristics and medical history of 142 resuscitated out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims with coronary heart disease were studied in order to identify factors that affect their long-term survival. The cardiac arrest event was classified as being secondary to an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in 44% (62 of 142), an ischemic event (IE) in 34% (49 of 142) and a primary ...

The serine protease granzyme B (GrB; 25 kDa) is capable of inducing apoptosis through both caspase-dependent and caspase-independent mechanisms. We designed a novel vascular-targeting fusion construct designated as GrB/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)121, which is composed of a non-heparin-binding isoform of VEGF and the proapoptotic pathway enzyme GrB fused via a short, flexible tethe...

The discovery and development of natural products with potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties have been one of the most interesting and promising approaches in the search for the treatment of many neurodegenerative diseases including ischemic stroke. Serum/glucose deprivation (SGD) has served as an excellent in vitro model for the understanding of the molecular mech...

BACKGROUND Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is an established risk factor for neurodevelopmental deficits in the offspring. Prenatal depression has been associated with neurodevelopmental deficits in the offspring, although investigations into unmedicated prenatal depression have been inconsistent. We hypothesized that unmedicated prenatal depressive symptoms would independently and jointly with...

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether interactions between intracranial cerebral saccular aneurysms and the perianeurysmal environment (PAE), in the form of contact constraints, influence aneurysm shape and risk of rupture. METHODS A total of 190 consecutive aneurysms during a 34-month period were retrospectively analyzed. Of these, 124 were ruptured (group 1) and 66 were ...
