The fact that the majority of the youngest radio pulsars are surrounded by expanding supernova remnants is strong evidence that neutron stars are produced in the supernovae of massive stars. In many cases, the pulsar appears significantly offset from the geometric centre of the supernova remnant, indicating that the neutron star has moved away from the site of the explosion with a substantial s...

We report the detection of the millisecond pulsar B1257+12 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In a 20 ks exposure we detected 25 photons from the pulsar, with energies between 0.4 and 2.0 keV, corresponding to the flux F X = (4.4 ± 0.9) × 10 −15 ergs s −1 cm −2 in this energy range. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law model with photon index Γ ≈ 2.8 and luminosity L X ≈ 2.5 × 10...

—Oak (Quercus spp.) stump sprouts are vital to sustaining oak’s presence and long-term dominance when regenerating oak or mixed-hardwood forests in southern Indiana. A study was initiated on the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana in 1987 to predict the sprouting potential and dominance probability of oaks. Before clearcut harvesting, we sampled 2,188 trees of fi ve oak species and meas...

A deterministic computer model was built to e\'aluate \'arious release strategies of sex-linked translocation homozygotes for the purpose of replacement of a local population of Aedes aegypti (L.) in a Kenyan village. The model incorporated overlapping generations, density-dependent larval survivorship, mating competiveness of males for females, immigration of wild types, and the release of adu...

This report summarises the cooperative research program on stable tearing between DSTO and CEAT. The main objective was to study the conditions under which aircraft materials fracture by stable tearing and to develop a predictive capability for the process under operational conditions. The experiments on both CCT and CT specimens were to assist in validation of numerical modelling. Tear bands w...

This is the newest publication from the Neuro Orthopaedic Institute, or Noigroup, and the prolific Lorimer Moseley–David Butler partnership. It is a patient-targeted handbook, fittingly described by one online patient-reviewer as ‘‘quirky—[an] accessible workbook,’’ and an updated and interactive alternative to the previous publication by the same authors, Explain Pain. If you are reading this ...

The effects of white-tailed deer browsing on species richness, density and height of forest regeneration were examined on three oak dominated forests in southern Ohio. Each study site consisted of four 20 ha silvicultural treatments, resulting in 12 experimental units. Mean estimated post harvest deer densities were 6 deer km. Three pairs of plots were established within each treatment at each ...

T enzyme Rubisco, short for ribulose1,5-bisphosphate carboxylaseyoxygenase, is the enzyme that incorporates CO2 into plants during photosynthesis. As it constitutes about 30% of the total protein in a plant leaf, Rubisco is probably the most abundant protein on earth and a major sink for plant nitrogen. Rubisco is widely accepted as the ultimate rate-limiting step in photosynthetic carbon fixat...

The effectiveness of small support spatial filters based on mean, median and morphological opening for the detection of scintillating ultra-dim stationary point targets in IR image sequences has been investigated. The effectiveness of two temporal filters was also studied. The filters were applied to two IR image sequences; an aircraft approaching in an uncluttered background, and an aircraft r...
