Evaluating factors affecting the liveliness of Mashhad’s public spaces by relying on image perception and analysis

Aims & Backgrounds: Public spaces are very important to urban vitality. The effective role of people due to their presence, social interactions and feeling of cheerfulness, keeps the space alive. Environmental factors play a role in creating this interaction that affects space. This research was done by using image analysis, which demonstrates a wide range of information based on human perception and emotion through image observation and many factors can be extracted through it, and its purpose is to identify and evaluate the factors It is effective in creating vitality in the urban spaces of Mashhad and the internal relationship of these factors. Methodology: This research has been done with a qualitative-quantitative approach and has an analytical method-evaluation. Given that a wide range of emotional and perceptual information is received from images, a qualitative survey based on online photo submission should be conducted. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics have been used to analyze the findings and results, and Chi-square statistics for independence have been used to evaluate the variables. Findings: From the responses, 109 distinct attributes were extracted that  that were conceptually related to each other and encapsulated in seven main groups; qualities of the environment, elements, formal and physical features, functions, feelings, activities and neighboring uses as the most important environmental factors in the formation of social life and vitality of community spaces. Two of these concepts are human features and the other factors are physical. Conclusion: Public space affects peoplechr(chr(chr('39')39chr('39'))39chr(chr('39')39chr('39')))s mentality through physical and human factors of the environment and if it creates a pleasant feeling, it encourages them to establish social interactions and exchange, which leads to the formation of social vitality.
