Evaluate the association between underweight, overweight and obesity with the self-care history in youth

Background: The negative impact of being underweight, overweight and obesity on health can increase the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases and disability among youth. Self- care has an important role in managing the lifestyle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between underweight, overweight and obesity with the self-care history in youth. Methods: This study was performed on data collected from a representative sample of 1140 young participant (aged between 18-29 years) in Aqqala City, the north of Iran. The using scale was the self-care measuring scale commonly used by the ministry of health. Eventually, a case-control study had been designed in which the persons with normal weight selected as a control group and the other weight groups (underweight, overweight and obesity) selected as case groups in order to evaluate the association of them with self-care history. Results: The prevalence of obesity was estimated at 8.8% and it was estimated at 23.6% for overweight and 58.4% for normal weight and 9.2% for underweight among youth. The frequency of self-care history based on self-care measuring scale was estimated at 2.4% for fair level, 69.3% for moderate level and 28.3% for good level among youth.
