Comparison between ENT operations performed in the morning and afternoon services of the Khalili Hospital and their role in the education of the residents

Introduction. Shiraz university of medical sciences presents surgical facilities in two services, the morning and the afternoon services. In this study,the number and type of ENT operations performed in these two services during a 12 months period in Khalili Hospital were compared to find out the differences between the operations performed in these services and the role they have in the education of residents. Methods. In this descriptive and prospective study,3728 patients operated in the ENT department of Khalili Hospital during the year 1377 in the two services were studied.The operations were divided into five categories: 1-tonsillectomy and surgeries of the oral cavity 2- tympanomasoid and other surgeries of the ears 3-surgeries of the nose and paranasal sinuses 4- surgeries of the neck and 5-other surgeries. The number and type of surgeries in each category were compared in the morning and afternoon services. Results. From the total 3728 patients, 1358 patients(36.43%) had been operated in the morning service and 2370 patients (63.57%) had been operated in the afternoon service. From 1832 cases in the first category(tonsillectomy and oral cavity operations), 414 cases (22.6%) had been operated in the morning service and 1418 cases(77.4%) had been operated in the afternoon service. From 819 cases of nose and paranasal sinuses,283 cases (34.55%) had been operated in the morning service and 536 cases(65.45%) had been operated in the afternoon service. From 548 operations on the ears, 309 patients (56.38%) had been operated in the morning service and 239 patients (43.62%) had been operated in the afternoon service. From 160 cases of neck surgeries,106 cases(66.25%) hadbeen operated in the morning service and 54 cases (33.75%) had been operated in the afternoon service. From 369 patients in the fifth category (other surgeries), 246 cases (66.66%) had been operated in the morning service and 123 cases (33.34%) had been operated in the afternoon service. Discussion. Residents hd aactive contribution in the operations done in the afternoon service. The operations in this service was about two times that of the morning service. Surgeries of the ear,nose and neck were frequently performed by residents under supervision of the attendings in the afternoon service. It seems that the afternoon service of shiraz university of medical sciences has a major role in treatment of the patients and also is an important factor in escalating the practical skills of the residents.
