Assessment of mental health and mental well-being and its relationship with weight gain in pregnant women during COVID-19 pandemic

Background and Aims: Pregnant women are one of the most high risk age groups and their mental health and mental well-being is effective on their own health, their family and society. Due to the prevalence of Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on mental aspects the purpose of this study was to investigate the mental health status and mental well-being and the factors affecting them during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study that examines the state of mental health and mental well-being and their related factors during the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. And demographic characteristics including (age, level of education of pregnant mother and their husbands, employment status of pregnant mother and their husbands, frequency of pregnancy, gestational age and body mass index) in the form of individual interviews on 245 pregnant women referred to urban health centers in Yasuj, Collected from April to October 1400 during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Results: This study was performed on 245 pregnant women with mean age of 29.72±6.61. The mean and standard deviation of the total mental health score in pregnant women was 24.50±11.32. According to the cut-off point 23 for Iranian mental health, the results of this study showed that 62.9% of pregnant women were suspected of having the mental disorder. The mean total score of mental well-being was 11.58±74.19. Our study also indicated that pre-pregnancy weight and the current weight of the pregnant mother were inversely related to the mean score of mental health and directly related to the mean score of mental well-being. Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of mental disorders in this study and the importance of mental health and well-being of pregnant women and its impact on fetal and neonatal health, psychological counseling is recommended as part of routine care programs for both pregnant women and their husbands especially during the Covid 19 pandemic.
