this study focuses on tracing the clearly defined elements of magic realism in toni morrison’s song of solomon as an illustrious african american example of the mode. magic realism is a fictional technique that combines fantasy with raw physical reality in a search for truth beyond that available from the surface of everyday life. toni morrison, as a distinguished african-american practitioner of the technique, is chosen to investigate the appropriateness of the technique in the hybrid condition of the relation to other influential and controversial movements, e.g. postmodernism and postcolonialism are fully explored and discussed in the course of the research. since magic realism is mostly attributed as an eminent branch of either of the literary schools; two main chapters of this research is allocated to examine magic realism in relation to these frequently debated movements.
