Abstract:

Introduction: A disaster evacuation program is one of the most important parts of hospital crisis management. The following study was carried out to determine the effects of animation-based teaching on hemodialysis patients’ performance in an emergency evacuation. Material and Method: In this quasi-experimental study, two out of four AJA Hospitals in Tehran that had hemodialysis wards, were selected using simple random sampling method. One of the hospitals was randomly selected as the traditional training group and the other one as the animation-based training group. Seventy hemodialysis patients in two groups of thirty-five participated in this study. The data was collected through a researcher-made performance checklist that composed Yes ‌‌-No questions to evaluate patients’ performance. The data was analyzed using descriptive and interpretive statistical methods and SPSS 22. P< 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Performance scores of both groups were similar before intervention and there was no significant difference in pre-test performance scores. Immediately after the intervention, there was a significant difference in post-test performance scores of the two groups. In both traditional and animation-based training groups, the scores rose from zero to 9.600 and from zero to 9.628, respectively. However, there was no significant difference between the scores of the two groups (P=0.86). There was also a significant difference in post-test scores, one month after the intervention. Performance scores of the traditional training group decreased from 9.600 to 8.428 while they increased from 9.628 to 9.971 for the animation-based training group. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the scores of the two groups one month after intervention (P=0.001). Discussion and Conclusion: The present study showed that, although both traditional and animation-based were effective teaching methods, the animation-based method was more effective than the traditional one due to the longer retention of the taught information.
