The effects of Pilates and diaphragm exercises on some pulmonary factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary Patients
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction and purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most important pulmonary diseases. The most important way to minimize the progress of the disease is to rehabilitate the lung. Rehabilitation of the lung improves respiratory pattern. To this end, the effects of two types of Pilates and Diaphragm exercises on some of the pulmonary factors in these patients were investigated. Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 24 male patients with mean age (56 ± 4/51) with moderate COPD were selected and randomly assigned into three groups of 8 (diaphragm exercise, Pilates exercise and group Control). Pilates and diaphragm exercises were performed for 8 weeks and 3 sessions per week in two exercises groups separately. The control group did not do any exercise. The Spirometry system measured the FEV1/FVC and respiratory rate per minute. The Modified Borg Dyspnoea Scale was completed to assess the dyspnea of the subjects. To analyze the data, Paired t-test was used. Findings: The findings showed that both types of exercise had an effect on pulmonary factors. FEV1 / FVC were significantly different between exercise and control groups (P≤ 0.05). There was a significant difference in the amount of dyspnea and respiratory rate in minutes between training and control groups (P≤ 0.05). No changes were observed in the control group (P> 0.05). Conclusion: Pilates and diaphragm exercises seem to play an important role in improving the pulmonary pattern of patients with pulmonary disease. The results showed that both types of exercises improved pulmonary factor, increased FEV1/FVC, and decreased dyspnea and respiratory rate per minute. Therefore, the use of the above exercises in the pulmonary rehabilitation program is recommended

Effects of Pentoxifylline on Oxygenation and Exercise Tolerance in Patients with Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Background: It was hypothesized that the use of Pentoxifylline would increase arterial O2 saturation and increase exercise tolerance in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Methods: We tested this hypothesis in 23 patients with COPD and pulmonary hypertension. Patients were randomized to receive Pentoxifylline or placebo, each for a 12-week period, in a prospectiv...

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects different aspects of patients’ life. By awareness of the quality of life and related factors of each patient, nurses can plan for and do proper care. So the present study was performed to evaluate health-related quality of life and related factors in patients with COPD. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional descriptive r...
full textEffect of Home-based Pulmonary Rehabilitation on Daily Activity of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation is an important part of treatment in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) with the goal of achieving and maintaining maximum functional independence since this disease causes symptoms including fatigue, and consequently decrease in daily living activity. Aim: To determine the effect of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation on daily living...
full textEvaluation of Prognostic Factors of Mortality in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Background and Objective: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic obstructive and irreversible disease which has a high mortality and morbidity rate. Systemic inflammation and the thrombotic process can influence the prognosis of these patients. The objectives of this study were to evaluate prognostic effects of CBC indices (WBC, PMN, MPV, RDW), forced expiratory volume-one se...
full textAspergillus colonization in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Background and Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been recognized as a risk factor for invasive aspergillosis. Airway colonization by Aspergillus species is a common feature of chronic pulmonary diseases. Nowadays, the incidence of COPD has increased in critically ill patients. The aim of the present study was to isolate and identify Aspergillus colonies in the respirator...
