The Effect of Self-Assessment Reading Strategies on the Function of Paramedical Science Students in Comprehension Drills

Background & Aim: The new methods of examination and evaluation such as self- assessment contribute to both instructor and learner toward finding out the attitudes, viewpoints, abilities and weaknesses of learners. This kind of examination also encourages the learner toward changing to an independent learner and forms the critical way of thinking inside of himself and encourages them to learn. This research pays attention to the evaluation of self-assessment impacts of reading strategies on the comprehension part of radiology students. Materials and Methods: In current study, two groups of army paramedical science university’s students have been evaluated. It had been asked from radiology branch students to evaluate their reading strategies by means of self-assessment reading skill’s checklist, while it hadn’t been asked from anesthesia’s students about comprehension and skill. Two kinds of exams had been utilized in current study: Testing the general skill of language TOFEL for controlling the rate of homogeneity of language level of both participated groups in research and comprehension section of the same TOFEL exam. The average of both groups in testing the general skill of language had been compared through Independent t-Test examination. Also, the average of comprehension testing of both groups had been evaluated through Independent t-Test examination. Results: According to the results of current study, it showed that the function of radiology branch students’ group is significantly better than anesthesia branch students’ group; also, the most of students had positive feeling of performing self-assessment testing and they believed that the process of concentration and thought have been effective and motivating in the process of learning. Discussion and Conclusion: Based on the current study results, it can be claimed that self-assessment testing has had a positive effect on the improvement of radiology students’ function about performing comprehension test, their long-term acquisition and also their consciousness about useful strategy.Present research have planned a framework for using self-assessment testing in Iran for future.
