Survival of Premature and Low Birth Weight Infants: A Multicenter, Prospective, Cohort Study in Iran
Authors
Abstract:
ABSTRACTBackground: The survival rate of preterm and low-birth-weight (LBW) infants depends on various factors such as birth weight, gestational age, and quality of care. The present study aimed at evaluating the survival rate of preterm and LBW infants, predictive factors, and the risk of mortality in three training hospitals of Mashhad and Tabriz cities. Methods: This prospective, cohort study was conducted during six months from 2013 to 2014. Infants with birth weight ≤1500 g or gestational age ≤32 weeks were enrolled. Their information was gathered by using data collection forms and clinical risk index for infants (CRIB II) was calculated for each participant. Infants were followed up until discharge from the hospital and their outcomes were determined. Kaplan-Meier and Log rock tests were used for survival analysis. Cox regression was also applied in order to find out the factors associated with infants’ survival. Results: Among the 338 followed up infants, 97 (28.7%) died and 241 (71.3%) remained alive. The median of preterm and LBW infants’ overall survival rate was 76 days (CI: 60.4-91.5). Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that three factors of birth weight, base excess, and fifth minute Apgar score had a significant relationship with the survival rate of infants (P

full textRelationship between Ureaplasma urealyticum Colonization and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Very Low Birth Weight Premature Infants: A Prospective Cohort Study
Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the second prevalent lung disease and one of the care challenges of premature newborns. Different risk factors play an important role in the development of this disease. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between colonization with Ureaplasma urealyticum and BPD.Methods: This prospective cohort study w...
full textPrediction Value of CRIB-II in Outcome of Preterm and Low Birth Weight Infants: a Prospective Cohort Study
Background: One of the most common methods of identifying mortality risk is the Clinical Risk Index for Babies scoring system (CRIB- II). The aim of this study was assessing the value of CRIB- II in predicting mortality risk in preterm and low birth weight infants in East Azerbaijan- Iran. Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study was carried out in 2013-2014 during 6 months in NICUs...
full textDevelopmental Outcomes of Premature and Low Birth Weight Infants
Background: Prematurity is the most common cause of death and disability And Preterm infants, are prone to developmental complications. For this reason this study was designed for follow up of these babies until 2 years by modified DDST-2. Methods: This study was a prospective longitudinal descriptive study from March 2009 to March 2011 in clinic of sheikh and Imam Reza Hospitals, mashhad, Iran...
full textEffect of Depression, Stress and Anxiety during Pregnancy on Low Birth Weight: A Prospective Cohort Study in Suburban Communities
Background and Objectives: Pre-natal mental health problems are major causes of disease burden, especially in lower socio-economic groups of population. The present study used data of a prospective cohort study to estimate the risk of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and stress, on birth weight. Materials and Methods: This study used data of 398 pregnant women who were...
full textIncidence and risk factors of pneumothorax in premature low birth weight infants under mechanical ventilation
Objective: pulmonary air-leakage especially pneumothorax (ptx), is a severe complication in neonates. The aim of this study was to assess the predisposing factors and frequency of ptx among the low birth weight (LBW) premature infants, under mechanical ventilation. Methods: This cross sectional study was performed in 121 LBW intubated premature infants at neonatal intensive care unit of a child...
