Study of Transaminases Activity in Women with Low Back Pain Following Core Stabilizing Exercise and Vitamin D Intake

Abstract:

Background: Deficiency or Insufficient levels of vitamin D are very common in liver patients and are closely related to musculoskeletal pains, including low back pain. Objective: The current study aimed to investigate of serum transaminases activity in women with chronic low back pain following a course of core stabilizing exercises and vitamin D intake. Methods: This clinical trial study was conducted in women with mean age 36.59 ± 5.50 year in 2019. 48 patients were selected by available sampling method and then randomly divided in four groups including control, exercise, vitamin D and exercise+ vitamin D (combined). The exercise and combined groups performed 8 weeks of core stabilizing exercises with different levels. The vitamin D and combined groups received 50,000 IU vitamin D/week for 8 weeks. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities were measured before and after the interventions. Data was analyzed by paired t and one-way analysis of variance tests. Findings: Eight weeks of core stabilizing exercises, vitamin D intake and the combined intervention were associated with a significant reduction in activity of enzymes AST, ALT and ALP. In addition, combined intervention induced more reduction in the AST and ALP activities compared with two other interventions and the decrease in ALT activity in the combined group was higher compared to the exercise group. Conclusion: It seems that core stabilizing exercises, vitamin D intake, and combination interventions may improve liver function in patients with chronic low back pain have low levels of vitamin D, by reducing liver enzymes activitites and combined intervention is associated with greater effectiveness in liver function.
