Study of the Facing Challenges in Nursing Education, related to the Patients’ Needs

Abstract:

Aims: Patient education is one of the most fundamental roles of the nurses. The nurse commitment is due to the nurse understanding of their education role, having preparation of patient education as an educator, and environmental factors. This study assesses the nursing education’s facing challenges in patient education field. Materials and Methods: This is a review article that is based on collecting data from electronic resources (Elsevier & Pubmed), and published article from 2000 to 2016, related to the topic. Results: Patient education is the basic rights of patients. For the optimum implementation of patient education, the nurse faces barriers, as the largest group of health care. These are the most important barriers of patient education, according to the studies: disproportion of number of patients with the number of nurses, lack of time, high density of nurses duties, lack of attention and support by managers, lack of organizational support, underestimating the education value in system, ineffective management, inappropriate organizational culture, patient anxiety and pain, unawareness of education benefits, lack of written resources in education, inappropriateness of therapeutic environment for education, underestimating the role of nurses in patient education by patients, lack of patient cooperation, the contrast between the role of different fields of medicine specialists, lack of economic resources (financial, equipment and facilities), lack of knowledge and skills for nurses, lack of motivation, and lack of interest of nurses to the education. Discussion and Conclusion: These are comments that could be helpful for the managers to overcome the barriers in patient education: spending more time for the nurse education, providing more material and resources in education for both the patients and nurses, seminars and education’s activities for nurses in terms of the ongoing evaluation, providing appropriate place for education, and supportive actions,
