Abstract:

Objectives: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an issue primarily of concern in adolescents and young adults. The Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory (OSI) is a self-report measure that offers a comprehensive assessment of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), including measurement of its functions and addictive features. Thus, this study seeks to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory-Functions (OSI-F) for assessing nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) for gifted adolescents. Methods: In this correlational study, 350 gifted adolescents who were selected using the convenience sampling method, were answered the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory-F (Cloutier & Nixon, 2003), the short version of the Self-Harm Screening Inventory for Adolescents (Kim et al., 2022), the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995), and the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (Luthans, Avolio, Avey & Norman, 2007). Results: The confirmatory factor analysis proved the same four function factors relevant, as in the previous study on college students. The model yielded significant correlations between factors (rs = .55-.75, p<.001). The factor structure of the Addictive Features function was also confirmed. All the items had significant path estimates (.42 to .83). Cronbach’s alpha for the addictive features scale was .87 and for the functions scales including internal affect regulation, social influence, external affect regulation and sensation seeking was .86, .87, .64 & .72, respectively. Convergent evidence for the functions factor scores and the addictive features scale was demonstrated through significant correlations with scales of depression, anxiety and stress and nonsuicidal self-harm and different aspects of psychological capital including self-efficacy, resilience, hope and optimism. Conclusions: Results show preliminary psychometric support for the OSI as a valid and reliable assessment tool to be used in both research and clinical contexts.
