Numerical investigation on the pullout shear strength of soil-nail interface using finite element method
Authors
Abstract:
Soil nailing is a popular reinforcement method for stabilizing slopes, excavations, and retaining walls in many countries. The pullout capacity of the soil-nail interface is a critical parameter for the design and safety assessment of soil-nailed systems. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model is developed using the commercial program ABAQUS to simulate the pullout test of a soil nail in a soil-nail pullout box. The stress-strain behavior of the soil and soil-nail interface is described by a Mohr-coulomb model and coulomb friction model respectively. A novel temperature-based reduction of friction coefficient has been applied in order to reduce the roughness of soil-nail interface as the slip occurs. Validation of the FE model is carried out by comparing the results of numerical simulations with experimental data from a previous work. The comparisons between the modeling results and experimental data have demonstrated that the established FE model can simulate the pullout behavior of a soil nail in a soil mass properly. Based on this, the verified FE model has been used to investigate the effect of different nail diameters, soil elasticity moduli and pullout rates on the pullout behavior of the soil nail.

Experimental and FDM study on the effect of geogrid tensile strength on pullout resistance
This paper presents the effect of geogrid tensile strength by calculating pullout resistance and geogrid-soil interaction mechanism. In order to investigate this interface, a series of pullout tests have been conducted by large scale reformed direct shear test apparatus in both cohesive and granular soils. In numerical, finite difference software FLAC3D has been carried out on experimental test...
full textInvestigation on the Ultrasonic Tube Hydroforming in the Bulging Process Using Finite Element Method
In ultrasonic tube hydroforming, the tube is hydro formed while the ultrasonic vibration is applied to the die. Prior studies provide experimental proof that ultrasonic tube hydroforming reduces corner radius, improves lubrication and uniform thickness. Use of ultrasonic vibration can decrease friction at the tube-die interface. Few attempts have been made to analyze the wire drawing while the ...

buildings with wall or frame-wall systems are more effective against earthquake forces and sustain less damage than buildings which their lateral resistance is solely depends on frames. four reinforced concrete (rc) structural wall specimens were subjected to cyclic loading using finite elements method with abaqus software in order to study influence of diagonal web reinforcement. the research ...
full textAn Investigation of the Seismic Interaction of Surface Foundations and Underground Cavities Using Finite Element Method
In this study, the seismic interaction of surface foundations and underground cavities was investigated. For this purpose, a parametric study of geometric dimensions of the foundation and cavity, their location, and the effect of the interaction between surface foundations and underground cavities was evaluated. The variable parameters include the ratio of the overburden height to the foundatio...
full textAnalyzing the Effects of Soil-Structure Interactions on the Static Response of Onshore Wind Turbine Foundations Using Finite Element Method
The use of wind turbines to generate electricity has increased in recent years. One of the most important parts of a wind turbine is the foundation, which should be designed accurately because it is influenced by difference forces. Soil cannot carry tension stress; thus, when a wind turbine foundation is applied eccentricity forces, a gap appears between the soil and foundation. The gap will ha...
