Abstract:

Considering the vulnerability of double-layer grid space structures to progressive collapse phenomenon, it is necessary to pay special attention to this phenomenon in the design process. Alternate path method is one of the most appropriate and accepted methods for progressive collapse resistant design of structures. Alternate Path Method permits local failure to occur but provides alternate paths around the damaged area so that the structure is able to absorb the applied loads without overall collapse. Following the sudden initial local failure event, severe dynamic effects may arise which should be taken into account in determining the realistic collapse behavior of the structure. In this paper, a new methodology based on alternate path method is presented to apply dynamic effects of initial local failure. The method is called nonlinear dynamic alternate path method. Due to its capability to take account of dynamic nature of the failure, this method can be used to evaluate realistic collapse behavior of the structure and to investigate the vulnerability of the structure to progressive collapse phenomenon.&#10&#10

Investigation of the Progressive Collapse Potential in Steel Buildings with Composite Floor System

Abnormal loads due to natural events, implementation errors and some other issues can lead to occurrence of progressive collapse in structures. Most of the past researches consist of 2- Dimensional (2D) models of steel frames without consideration of the floor system effects, which reduces the accuracy of the modeling. While employing a 3-Dimensional (3D) model and modeling the concrete slab sy...

Probing the Probabilistic Effects of Imperfections on the Load Carrying Capacity of Flat Double-Layer Space Structures

Load carrying capacity of flat double-layer space structures majorly depends on the structures' imperfections. Imperfections in initial curvature, length, and residual stress of members are all innately random and can affect the load-bearing capacity of the members and consequently that of the structure. The double-layer space trusses are susceptible to progressive collapse due to sudden buckli...

the effect of initial geometric imperfection on the load bearing capacity of double layer grid space structures

the existence of some geometrically imperfect members, like initial curvature in a double layer space structures with hundreds or thousands of members is almost inevitable. these imperfections give rise to loss of load bearing capacity of double layer space structures. to evaluate the effect of initial member imperfection on load bearing capacity of double layer space structures and their failu...

Numerical Study of Progressive Collapse in Intermediate Moment Resisting Reinforced Concrete Frame Due to Column Removal

Progressive collapse is a chain reaction of failures propagating throughout a portion of the structure disproportionate to the original local failure occurring when a sudden loss of a critical load‐bearing element initiates a structural element failure, eventually resulting in partial or full collapse of the structure. Both General Services Administration (GSA) and United States Department of D...
