In vitro comparison of effects of extracts of Ailanthus altissima and Salvia nemorosa on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris

Authors

Abstract:

Introduction: Some plants have antiseptic roles and often do not cause harm to humans or animals. In this study, we try to introduce plants to disinfect spaces and surfaces contaminated with bacteria so that toxic substance does not remain in the environment. Materials and Methods: Ailanthus altissima and Salvia nemorosa extracts were used against lyophilized Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris in vitro. Ailanthus altissima leaves and flowering shoots of Salvia nemorosa were collected and dried in shade and powdered. Aqueous, hydroalcoholic and methanolic extracts were prepared separately from the plants by Maceration method. After evaporation of solvent and drying of the extract, four concentrations of 20, 30, 40, 50 mg/ml were used in Mueller Hinton Agar culture medium by well method. Saponin extraction was performed with 20% ethanol. The statistical results were analysed with ̏Graphpad Prism version 7̋ software.    Results: The aqueous extract of S. nemorosa was effective on P. aeruginosa and the diameter of halo of lack of microbial growth was 26±1 mm. The diameter of the non-growth halo with juniper methanolic extract was 17.5±0.5 mm )on P. aeruginosa( and 16.5±0.5 mm on (S. aureus) and was significant (P<0.0001). Only A. altissima hydroalcoholic extract had an effect on P. vulgaris. High saponin content of two plants have increased their effectiveness. Conclusion: Aqueous extract of S. nemorosa is recommended to inhibit the growth and proliferation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In vitro Evaluation of Methylxanthines and Some Antibiotics: Interaction against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Background: The development of resistance to antimicrobial agents is a major problem in chemotherapy. Finding agents which potentiate antimicrobial activity could be favorable. There are some reports that methylxanthines changed the inhibitory effect of antibacterial agents. Thus, possible synergistic effect of methylxanthines, aminophylline and caffeine on some antibiotics, carbenicillin, ceft...
