Evaluation of the relationship between chronic periodontitis and hypertension in women patients referred to dental school of Golestan University of Medical Sciences

Abstract Background and Aims: Chronic periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that results from the accumulation of plaque and mass around the gingival tissue. Hypertension is one of the main causes of fertility in the world. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between chronic periodontitis and hypertension in women. Material and Methods: This case-control study was conducted on female patients of dental faculty, Golestan University. Case group were chosen from periodontics female patients and control group were from other departments, using easy sampling. Two groups were matched through age and BMI. First, Periodontal indexes ad pocket depth, attachment level, gingival and plaque index then, blood pressure were measured at that session. Results: The study participants were 178 women aged 20 to 49 years. The mean differences of both blood pressures (systolic and diastolic) between the case and control groups were statistically significant. In addition, the differences between the mean of periodontal indices in the case and control groups were statistically significant. Also, there was a significant weak positive relationship (r <0.3) between both blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) with the periodontal indices. Conclusion: Therefore, regular oral examinations can play an effective role in preventing hypertension with a joint effort by doctors and dentists towards better managing women’s health.
