Evaluation of public exposure in high background natural radiation areas (HBNRAs) of Ramsar

Authors

Abstract:

Some areas in Ramsar, a northern city of IRAN, have the most natural radiation level in the world which is due to high concentration of 226Ra and its daughter products specially 222Rn and therefore these regions have been interested for radiation related investigations. The aim of this study also has been to evaluate public exposure in such areas in Ramsar, in order to obtain up to date information of the region. In this regard, 24 houses in the Ramsar HBNRAs were selected and indoor annual effective dose for some of the inhabitants (24 persons) were measured by passive methods using thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) and radon diffusion chamber. Gamma dose rates were determined using survey meter, RDS-110. The measured annual effective dose due to 226Ra and 222Rn were in the range of: 2.11 up to greater than 68 mSv and indoor Rn concentrations varied between50 to greater than 2280 Bq.m-3.  The total annual effective dose due to indoor gamma radiation (due to 226Ra and its daughter products, 214Pb and 214Bi) and also 222Rn was measured in the range of 2.11 to greater than 68 mSv.

Evaluation of High Level Environmental Background Radiation Areas and its Variation in Ramsar

Introduction The exposure of human beings to ionizing radiation from natural sources is a continuing and inescapable feature of life on earth. For most individuals, this exposure exceeds that from all man-made sources combined. Materials and Methods In this study, the annual effective dose in high level environmental background radiation areas (HLEBRAs) of northern city of Ramsar in Iran was de...

Non-linear phenomena in biological findings of the residents of high background radiation areas of Ramsar

Some Areas of Ramsar, a city in northern Iran are among the world’s wellknown inhabited areas with highest levels of natural radiation. Annual exposure levels in these areas are up to 260 mGy y‐1 and the mean exposure rate is about 10 mGy y‐1 for a population of about 2000 residents. If elevated levels of natural radiation as high as a few hundred mSv per year is detrimental to health and...

Martian Residents: Mass Media and Ramsar High Background Radiation Areas

Considering current controversies regarding the health effects of low doses of ionizing radiation, study of the high background radiation areas such as Ramsar, Iran can help scientists better evaluate the validity of linear no-threshold (LNT) hypothesis. Ramsar is a coastal city in northern Iran with some areas known to have the highest levels of natural background radiation in the world. The m...

Public exposure to natural radiation sources (Ramsar Case Study)

Introduction: Human beings are naturally exposed to ionizing radiation in any environment. There are two main contributors to radiation exposures from natural sources: cosmic rays, Cosmo genic radionuclides, and radioactive nuclides that originated in the earth's crust. According to the latest data provided by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Rad...

Evaluation of gene expression of MLH1 and MSH2 between inhabitants of High Background Radiation Areas in Ramsar, Iran

Introduction: Annual effective radiation dose from all natural sources is approximately about 2.4 mSv and contribution of unnatural or man-made sources is 0.8 mSv. In some places of Ramsar, radiation dose due to radon exposure is about 3700 Bqm -3 while according to US EPA instruction radon levels should be 200 Bq m-3. Amazingly, there is not a meaningful result in the studies...
