Abstract:

Introduction: Hydrocephaly is a common complication of intra ventricular brain tumors. The aim of this study was to determine, demographic and clinical features and type of hydrocephaly before and after surgical interventions in patients with intra ventricular brain tumor surgery. Material and methods: In a cross-sectional study, 100 patients with intra ventricular brain tumors who were candidates for tumor surgery were joined to study. The presence of hydrocephalus before and after surgery, EVD insertion and other characteristics including location of tumor, pathology and demographic characteristics of the patients, and management of hydrocephalus were analysed. Results: 102 patients undergoing surgery, 81 (79.4%) of the patients had hydrocephalus before surgery and 41 (59.8%) of the patients suffered from hydrocephalus after surgery. The incidence of hydrocephalus was not significantly different in terms of pathology and location of the tumor and demographic characteristics of the patients. Our results showed that hydrocephalus was not significantly different in patients with intra ventricular tumors in terms of individual characteristics, tumor location and pathology, but presence of hydrocephalus before and after surgery, according to some features such as colloid cyst, medulloblastoma and ependymoma grade 2 as well as tumor location were significantly different. Conclusion: According to the results of study, it seems that some of features, including pathology and location of tumor, are effective in the subsequent hydrocephalic survival (both before and after the operation), and if these findings are definite, according to these features, the necessary therapeutic measures for prevention and treatment of hydrocephalus after surgery, including ventriculoperitoneal shunt and EVD insertion, can be predict.
