Abstract:

Abstract Introduction: neuropathy is a condition in which the peripheral nervous system is disrupted. The study of the effects of antioxidants on the performance improvement of this system is vital. This study was aimed at the investigation of the effects of date extract on nerve conduction velocity, distal latency, and wave height of the sciatic nerve in male rats. Materials and Methods: this laboratory study used 24 male Wistar rats weighting 250-300 grams, divided into the test and control group. The test group received 10% date extract, daily, at 4 ml per kilogram of body weight, for three weeks. At the beginning, nerve conduction velocity, distal latency, and wave height of the sciatic nerve were examined in all the animals, and reexamined for nerve conduction velocity at the end, three weeks later. P-values lower than 0.05 were considered significant. Results: sciatic nerve conduction velocity and wave height were significantly increased, however, distal latency of the knee significantly declined in the test group compared to the control group   Conclusion: The compositions of date extract accelerate electrical signal transmission

The effects of lettuce extract on the level of T4, memory and nerve conduction velocity in male rats

Objective: According to the traditional medicine, lettuce can affect nerve conduction velocity and memory. So, to investigate the effect of lettuce seeds extract on body activities, lettuce seeds were used. Materials and Methods: In the present study, the effects of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seeds extract consumption (in drinking water) on T4 level...

Effect of Dexamethasone on Preventing Tibial Nerve Conduction Velocity Loss in Tourniquet Neurepathic Rat

Introduction: Ischaemic-reperfusion nerve injury has been suggested as the mechanism for post-tourniquet limb paralysis. As dexamethasone (Dex) has been shown to Prevent ischaemic-reperfusion process in some tissues, we tested the hypothesis that this drug would reduce tourniquet induced nerve injury. Methods: 36 male Wistar rats (200-250 gr) were chosen and divided randomly into 6 equal grou...

Evaluation of Changes in Nerve Conduction Velocity in the Lower Limbs of Football Players

Background & Aims: Lower limbs’ nerves are exposed to mechanical injuries in athletes (e.g. football players), because of the excessive physical demand of their job. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of regular and intense sports, such as football, on nerves in the lower leg. This study was conducted during 2006 to 2007 in the Shiraz Rehabilitation Faculty, Univer...

P49: The Evaluation of Aqueous Extract of Glycyrrhiza Glabra on Nerve Recovery in the Rat after Sciatic Nerve Injury

Peripheral nerve injury requires a long recovery period, and recovery, once attained, usually is incomplete. Inflammatory procedures may inhibit functional recovery after nerve injury and produce cell death in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Since the glycyrrhiza glabra extract has anti-inflammatory effects, it could reduce the severity of injury. The aim of t...
