Abstract:

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system with high prevalence in the world and Iran. The common complications of disease are depression and drowsiness. Due to structural and functional brain changes following depression and drowsiness in patients with MS, brain electrical stimulation may be considered as an effective intervention in therapy. Materials and Methods: In this double blind clinical trial, 30 patients with MS were randomly divided into experimental and sham a-tDCS groups according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Correspondingly, the anode electrode was placed on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and cathode on the opposite supra orbital. In the experimental group, 20-minute DLPFC a-tDCS with intensity of 1.5 mA was performed during 10 sessions for 20 days with a one-day rest interval between sessions. However, in the sham a-tDCS group, although the electrodes were placed in the same positions as it used for the experimental group, the stimulation was slowly turned off after 30 seconds. Results: The results in the experimental group showed that the depression after intervention was significantly decreased as compared to before intervention (P<0.05), but there was no significant differences in the rate of drowsiness before and after the intervention (P>0.05), although the trend of drowsiness was toward reduction. Also, drowsiness and depression level were significantly improved after the intervention in experimental as compared to control group. Conclusion: Multi-session a-tDCS over the left DLPFC have a significant effects on the improvement of depression and rate of drowsiness in patients with MS.

Modulation of Drug Craving in Crystalline-Heroin Users by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex

Background: Drug craving, the main cause of relapse and a major motivator for drug use, is a challenging obstacle in substance use treatment. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulatory technique, has shown promising outcomes in treating different neuropsychiatric disorders such as drug addiction, more specifically on drug craving. The aim in the current study...

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder to Improve Decision Making and Reduce Obsession Symptoms

Objective: Recent studies on treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have investigated noninvasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to improve patients’ impaired emotion and cognition. However, such experiments have yielded mixed results, especially with respect to cognition. This study aimed to investigate whethe...

Effect of Mindfulness-based Therapy on Pain and Depression in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis

Objective: Few studies have investigated the frequency and intensity of pain and depression in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Thus, researchers recommend systematic screening and managing pain and depression in patients with MS. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Mindfulness-based Therapy (MBT) in reducing pain and depression in patients with MS. Methods: This is a quasi...

Enhancement of Visuospatial Working Memory by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Prefrontal and Parietal Cortices

Objective: Previous studies have reported dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and posterior parietal (PPC) activation during the performance of spatial working memory (SWM), so we decided to investigate the comparison of Transcranial Direct current stimulation (tDCS) effect between these two areas. Methods: Fifty-four healthy right-handed students (27 female, 27 male; age= 24.3±.2 years) w...
