Abstract:

The development of the mathematical model of mass transfer and diffusion process can determine the behavior of dissolved impurities in the flow boiling within viscous sublayer. Application of a new model to calculate the distribution of dissolved impuritiesconcentration within viscous sublayer and estimation of its thickness based on heat conduction layer and evaporation layer (macro-microlayer model) is the major goal of this study.

Modeling and Simulation of Nucleate Boiling

This work investigates the modelization and simulation of liquid-vapor phase change in compressible flows. Each phase is modeled as a compressible fluid equipped with its own Equation of State (EOS). We suppose that inter-phase equilibrium processes in the medium operate at a short timescale compared to the other physical phenomena such as convection or thermal diffusion. This assumption provid...

Heat transfer in nucleate pool boiling of multicomponent mixtures

Steady state pool boiling heat transfer coefficients have been obtained experimentally for acetone–isopropanol–water and acetone–MEK (methyl ethyl ketone)–water ternary systems. The data show that, for a given heat flux, the heat transfer coefficients of mixtures are lower than those obtained for pure components constituting the mixture. The measured heat transfer coefficients were compared wit...

Nucleate boiling from smooth and rough surfaces - Part 2: Analysis of surface roughness effects on nucleate boiling

The effect of surface roughness on nucleate boiling heat transfer is not clearly understood. This study is devised to conduct detailed heat transfer and bubble measurements during boiling on a heater surface with controlled roughness. This second of two companion papers presents an analysis of heat transfer and bubble ebullition in nucleate boiling with new measures of surface roughness: area r...

Prediction of the onset of nucleate boiling in microchannel flow

The onset of nucleate boiling in the flow of water through a microchannel heat sink was investigated. The microchannels considered were 275 lm wide by 636 lm deep. Onset of nucleate boiling was identified with a high-speed imaging system and the heat flux at incipience was measured under various flow conditions. An analytical model was developed to predict the incipient heat flux as well as the...

Momentum effects in steady nucleate pool boiling during microgravity.

Pool boiling experiments were conducted in microgravity on five space shuttle flights, using a flat plate heater consisting of a semitransparent thin gold film deposited on a quartz substrate that also acted as a resistance thermometer. The test fluid was R-113, and the vapor bubble behavior at the heater surface was photographed from beneath as well as from the side. Each flight consisted of a...

Direct Numerical Simulation of Subcooled Nucleate Pool Boiling

With the long-term objective of Critical Heat Flux (CHF) prediction, a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) framework for simulation of subcooled and saturated nucleate pool boiling is developed. One case of saturated, and three cases of subcooled boiling at different subcooling levels are simulated. Grid refinement study is also reported. Both boiling and condensation phenomena can be computed si...
