Comparison of the Effectiveness of Emotion Regulation Training with Cognitive Therapy based on Mindfulness on Resilience and Self-Compassion in Irritable Bowel Syndrome Patients

Introduction: The present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of emotion regulation training with cognitive therapy based on mindfulness on resilience and self-compassion in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Materials and methods: This research was semi-experimental and of pre-test-post-test-follow-up design type with control group. The number of 300 female patients with irritable bowel syndrome in Ilam city who visited the private practice of internal medicine specialists in 2018-2019. The sample size was obtained based on the Fleiss sample size estimation equation, 12.07, which was considered to be 20 people for each group. 60 people in a simple cluster method and based on informed consent that met the entry criteria, and then based on demographic characteristics, they were divided into three groups (20 people under the training of emotion regulation based on the Grass model, 20 people under mindfulness based on cognitive therapy and 20 people from the control group) were replaced. After the training, the post-test was conducted for the groups. The instruments used in this research were the Connor-Davidson Resilience Questionnaire (CD-RIS) and the self-compassion questionnaire of Neff (2003). For data analysis, SPSS23 software and repeated measurement variance analysis statistical test were used. Findings: Emotion regulation training and cognitive therapy training based on mindfulness have an effect on changes in people's resilience and self-compassion and its components (p-value=0.001). There is a significant difference between the trainings conducted on irritable bowel syndrome patients and cognitive therapy based on mindfulness has had a greater impact on resilience and self-compassion and its components compared to emotional regulation training. Discussion and conclusion: According to the research findings, cognitive therapy based on mindfulness can be used as an effective method to increase resilience and self-compassion in people with irritable bowel syndrome.
