Calculation of Neutron Dose Ratio of Heart, Lung and Liver due to breast cancer Proton Therapy using MCNPX code
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: The proton beam produced in particle accelerators has an appropriate therapeutic potential. In this research, proton therapy of breast cancer is simulated using the MCNPX code in a MIRD phantom, also the contribution of scattered neutron dose during the proton therapy were calculated for the Heart, Lung and Liver. Materials and Methods: For simulation of the proton therapy, the code based on the Monte Carlo method is used. Many investigations on the proton therapy planning simulations have been carried out using MCNPX and the other codes. In this study, a spherical tumor with the same elemental composition of breast is located at its tissue with 1 cm in radius. Bragg peak is created in tumor of the breast, for the proton beam energy of 70 MeV. Bragg peak of the 70 MeV proton beam energy is precisely placed at the end of the tumor. Results: The results show that the scattered neutron dose ratio in the tissues close to the breast such as heart (1.25E-3), lung (1.2E-3) and liver (9E-5) are negligible. Conclusion: The MCNPX (a Monte carlo simulation code) is a multi-purpose code which can be used for calculation of absorbed doses in radiation therapy. As the results of the code show, the contribution of scattered neutron dose is negligible in breast proton therapy.

Proton Therapy of eye using MCNPX code
Introduction: Proton radiotherapy is the one of advanced teletherapy methods. The protons deposit their maximum energy in a position called Bragg peak. Therefore, for treatment of cancer, the tumor should be placed at the Bragg peak or SOBP. The scattered photons and neutrons is a challenge in proton radiotherapy. The aim of this study is calculation of absorbed dose from scatt...
full textAssessment of secondary particles in breast proton therapy by Monte Carlo simulation code using MCNPX
Background: The present study aimed to investigate the equivalent dose in vital organs, including heart and lung, due to secondary particles produced during breast proton therapy. Materials and Methods: The numerical ORNL female-phantom was improved and simulated using the Monte Carlo MCNPX code. The depth-dose profile of proton beams with different energies was simulated. The proper energy ran...
full textA comparison of arrived dose to the heart in the treatment of breast cancer in different modes of proton radiation by proton therapy using Monte Carlo simulation
Introdution: Today, the Advantages of radiation therapy by charged particles is indicated for the treatment of cancerous. During the passing of proton beam in the body tissues, secondary particles produce, which penetrate to the body healthy tissues and cause damage. The aim of this research was calculating the Spread out Bragg Peak for covering the breast cancer and investigating arrived dose ...
full textCalculation of total dose and dose equivalent distribution in the treatment of lung cancer using MR-guided carbon therapy
Nowadays, in order to improve the accuracy of treatment in radiation therapy, there are many attempts to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to the advantages of excellent soft tissue contrast and ultra-fast pulse sequences. On the other hand, carbon-ion radiation therapy is developing rapidly due to the benefits of greater relative biological effectiveness (RBE) and the application in the...
full textComparison and Evaluation of the Effects of Rib and Lung Inhomogeneities on Lung Dose in Breast Brachytherapy using a Treatment Planning System and the MCNPX Code
Introduction: This study investigates to what extent the computed dose received by lung tissue in a commercially available treatment planning system (TPS) for 192Ir high-dose-rate breast brachytherapy is accurate in view of tissue inhomogeneities and presence of ribs. Materials and Methods: A CT scan of the breast was used to construct a patient-equivalent phantom in the clinical treatment plan...
full textEvaluation of the dose and flux of secondary particles in the lung tissue in breast proton therapy using the Monte Carlo simulation code
Unlike proton therapy, conventional radiation therapy directs X-rays not only at the tumor but also unavoidably at nearby healthy tissue. Protons deliver radiation to tumor tissue while the healthy structures will be spared during proton therapy. When protons travel through matter, secondary particles like neutrons and photons are produced. It is believed that the secondary dose can lead to sec...
