Associations between Resilience and Quality of Life in Nurses: The Mediating Role of Emotional Expressivity

  Background and purpose: Nurses deal with many tensions that can have negative influences on their mood, job performance, and quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of emotional expressivity on resilience and quality of life among nurses. Materials and methods: In this correlational study, the participants included 204 nurses selected from three hospitals in Mashhad, Iran 2017, using cluster sampling. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Quality of life scale (WHOQOL-26), and Emotional Expressivity Questionnaire (EEQ) were administered. Pearson’s correlation and path analysis were applied in SPSS Amos (v23). Results: Pearson correlation indicated a significant positive correlation between resilience and quality of life (r= 0.309). Also, significant correlations were seen between quality of life and positive emotional expressivity (r= 0.517), negative emotional expressivity (r= -0.361), and intimacy expressivity (r= 0.494). Path analysis also showed that resilience was associated with quality of life through emotional expressivity. Conclusion: According to this study, resilience and emotional expressivity can improve the quality of life of nurses.
